Jonah Hex #1… Excellent

I just finished reading the first issue of DC’s Jonah Hex, and I just had to post on here that I thought it was excellent. I think it’s better than the other current western from Vertigo, Loveless. Conor brought it up in the podcast a few weeks back, and I was finally able to track down a copy of the first issue. I will be picking up the second.

The whole thing was exactly what I was in the mood for when I cracked open this western. It was clear and I knew what was going on. The writing was great and while it straddled the line over hokey in some of the narration, but it wasn’t in a bad way, and actually fit very well.

I also really enjoyed the artwork too. It was bright and broad and, again, just old fashioned enough to be right for the material. I did noticed that several of the characters seemed to look a lot like some actors out there. Among them, would be of course Clint Eastwood, and oddly enough, Colm Meaney. Really.

Comments

  1. I liked it a lot. Issue two is already out.

It made me want to pop in ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ afterwards.

  2. Huh. I’m not a cowboy persion. I do like Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, but that’s about it.

Would you recommend it for non-cowboy people? Who’s writing it?

  3. I’m not sure I can recommend it to a completely non-cowboy oriented person, but if you liked Unforgiven (which is the ultimate post modern comment on the classic western), you might like it. I would say that you might want to check out Loveless instead. But I liked it, so I can recommend trying the first issue, for something different.

  4. The second issue is out already.
