iFlashback! August 20th, 2003

It’s time for iFlashback! A weekly feature in which we take a look at some comics that were on sale nine years ago. Why nine years and not ten? Well because our Mondays in 2012 sync up with the Wednesdays of 2003.

So jog down memory lane with me. The date is August 20th, 2003. The number one film at the box office is Freddy VS Jason and these are some of the comics at your local comic book shop.

Comments

  1. I love this feature. Human Target was awesome, and Bendis’ Daredevil is slowly working it’s way to the top of my mental “I really ought to pull those out and re-read them” list.

Anyone know what the story is with Cinnamon? I don’t remember that book.

    • Don’t know about Cinnamon – but great Chaykin cover!

    • @Ken-I don’t know if you mean the Cinnamon series or Cinnamon as a character, but the character has been appearing on some of the back-ups of All Star Western (which, if you haven’t been reading, is a series I’ve been really enjoying). I don’t know anything about the character beyond these few stories, but if I recall correctly she became a gunfighter after her father was murdered when she was little and she was sent to an orphanage. She’s teamed up with Nighthawk in the current back-ups.

    • Couldn’t believe how good Human Target was when I got the two trades that were reissued last year. Must guys for any comics fan. It’s a real shame they didn’t continue to collect the run.

  2. I was in the middle of about a 10 year break from comics at the time. It’s fun to see what I missed.

  3. Was Rucka’s Wonder Woman run any good? I’m a fan of his writing and have always wanted to read a good Wonder Woman series. Is it worth checking out?

  4. That Daredevil run was amazing. For some reason issue 50 was my favorite of Maleev’s covers. Matt is finally KING!

  5. Two things that struck me reading this: That Exiles run that Winick put together was consistently very good and underrated and I sometimes forget how special Runaways was with Vaughan and Alphona on it.

My big regret from the Boston Con this year was that I never go the chance to have that Daredevil book signed by Maleev. What a great cover!

  6. Man, some good stuff. I loved the Bendis run on DD, for the art and writing. Rucka’s WW was the best, and that Smax mini was a hoot.

I never saw the Big Bang Comics one before, but I would like to read it if I can find it!

  7. I’d like to check out Rucka’s Wonder Woman and that Human Target. Javier Pulido is great. Runaways and Bendis’ Daredevil…literally the two best things ever produced by Marvel.

  8. that Outsiders series was one of the first superhero comics I ever read, and damn they were good. It’s kinda weird just how good and how bad Judd Winick can get :/

    • This is exactly what I thought when I saw it on the list. Outsiders was amazing. And now what we have is Winick’s Catwoman and Batwing? I still don’t understand why he wasn’t on Red Hood and JLI when the relaunch started. Red Hood could have been like Outsiders will more killing.

  9. Read Daredevil, Smax, and Runaways. All are highly recommended – for those interested Smax was a mini spinoff from Alan Moore’s Top Ten – perhaps the most interesting (for my money) of the ABC line. But of these I would say Bendis/Maleev on Daredevil borders on legendary.

  10. I remember reading Human Target and not liking it. Probably because, stupid me, I thought it would be like the show but it totally isn’t. Should give it another shot and see if I’ll like it.

Here are some other big events to fall on August 20th:

-1858: Charles Darwin publishes his book on Evolution.
-1975: NASA launches Viking 1 to Mars.

  11. Exiles was such a fun book.

  12. I miss Exiles SO much. 🙁

  13. Man that Daredevil cover is Hardcore.

    Hyuck hyuck!

  14. love the runaway books

  15. I really liked Exiles and love that Image JSA mock up whatever that was, never seen it but is funny and looks just like All-Star Comics old logo, they do battle nazis too often but they’re fun to watch get beat up. Alan Moore has done a lot of stuff I never seen and I want that complete DD run in Omnibus format but pretty sure its pricey now….can’t say I don’t like Mark Waid’s run either. Peter Milligan is one of those writers I’ve come to love for cult type titles and didn’t know who he was nine years ago, I remember X-Statix and just ordered the omnibus but when it was out didn’t know he was on it.
