iFanboy Upstarts: Kalman Andrasofszky

Comic creators come from a lot of places. Some come from the advertising world, some from movies, and a growing portion of artists got their start in the world of roleplaying games. This week’s choice in our weekly iFanboy Upstarts spotlight is one such artist, Kalman Andrasofsky.

This Toronto-born artist got his start as a professional artist doing illustrations for paper-based RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons, Star Wars and Vampire: The Masquerade. He did some small independent work in the late 90s and early 2000s, but his first real comic assignment was co-creating the short-lived DC series iCandy in 2003 with writing duo Danny Abnett and Andy Lanning. Illustrating both the covers and interiors, the series only lasted for six issue before Kalman was back bouncing around comics and RPG. In that time, the artist become a go-to guy for covers, doing work on DC’s Ion maxiseries, Checkmate, various G.I. Joe covers for IDW  well as an issue of Action Comics. In 2007 he did a number of fill-ins and one-shots in Supergirl & The Legion of Superheroes and Legion of Monsters: Satanna before settling in for his second long-term assignment with 2008’s NYX: Long Way Home series, which like iCandy lasted six issues. His last major interior work was on the amazing Dazzler one-shot with writer Jim McCann, and since then has been the regular cover artist for Marvel’s X-23 and Boom!’s Soldier Zero.

Andrasofky is keeping his next major assignment under wraps, so until then let’s look over some of the highlights he’s created so far.

Comments

  1. Certainly not bad. But not exactly my choice of style.

  2. He’s a great guy, to boot!

  3. I love that last page, what’s it from?

  4. wow, great art.

  5. Love those Rebels covers. Good times. I’ll have to look him up.

  6. Where did you get the Satana pages and the Dazzler pages? Didn’t see them on his blog.

  7. For a Justice League of America story, I wouldn’t mind Jim Lee taking a month+ off and let Kalman Andrasofszky take over for a few. I’d LOVE to see the continuation of the new Starro!

    Just saying.

  8. Oh man, that R.E.B.E.L.S cover was so great.

  9. I was really paying attention to this article and was scanning the images….got so excited that there might be a Luther series lol

Anyway really nice collection here, much better when you pay attention a second time

  10. I wonder if DC will ever trade the iCandy series Kalman did with DnA. That was some gorgeous art. (and it was DnA so obviously the story was good too).
