Henry Cavill Talks Superman In EW

When we first heard the news that Henry Cavill had been cast as Superman, I was impressed. Having been a fan of The Tudors, and not at all anti-UK-actor, I saw it as a very good choice. He'd always been a standout on the show, and I was even more surprised when I saw that the actor is only 27 years old. That would mean that he was very young in the early parts of The Tudors, and he pulled off a definite maturity and gravitas. Then I got vaguely depressed about my own station in life, and how it's been since I was 27, before pulling out of it to make this post.

This week's Entertainment Weekly, out on Friday, features the below cover, as well as an interview with the actor starring in the movie produced by Christopher Nolan and directed by Zack Snyder. For his screen test, he had to wear a replica of the Christopher Reeve costume, to which Snyder said, “If you can put on that suit and pull it off, that’s an awesome achievement.”

Cavill wasn't so sure, saying, "All I could think was, Oh, God, they’re going to look at me and go, ‘He’s not Superman. Not a chance.' The actor inside me was going, ‘You’re not ready! You’re not ready!"

But Snyder was convinced. “He walked out and no one laughed. Other actors put that suit on and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go, ‘Wow. Okay, this is Superman.’ ”

And here's two more images of Cavill from the issue. Photographed February 12th, 2011.

"Clark, without your glasses…and with that tacky belt buckle…I'm beginning to suspect…"

  1. When I was reading this I was thinking of Grant Morrison talking about All-Star Superman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZpPHffldws

  2. OMG they are going to use the 70’s suit, no this is crazy, this is going to be terrible.

sorry just wanted to get that out of the way. I’m actually glad they threw him in the suit and based some of their decision on that.

and my god, look at those cheek bones. how is that not iconic Supes.

  3. Am I crazy, or does he kinda sorta almost resemble Bill Hader in that pic??
    Meh, maybe I’m nuts..

Either way, I haven’t seen The Tudors yet, but it’s on my list! His face looks a bit harsh to be Supes..he looks more like a Hal Jordan type to me..but I’m really confident in Snyder and Nolan, they’ve definitely earned my faith!

  4. I just finished watching the final series of The Tudors a week or so ago. In it Cavill plays a 60 year old man, and it actually kind of works. He doesn’t come off as goofy as Rhys Meyers (Henry VIII) does playing old. Just an extremely graceful performance. I’ve only gotten more and more excited about this casting.

  5. @WeaklyRoll  They didn’t actually say they were using that suit in the film. It was just his costume for the audition.

  6. @PaulMontgomery  The old man Henry VIII voice was goofier than Bale’s Batman voice. And you’re right.

  7. @Paul, no I know, i was just going with the fanboy rage to get it out of the way, thinking that fans would be jumping over something as ridiculous as that. need to work on my delivery!

  8. @WeaklyRoll  Figured as much, but I just wanted to put a finger in that dike before it started raining.

@josh  Rhys Meyers is so ridiculous in the entire series, but that was just WAY over the top silly. I love how crazy the character is though. “LOOK! I am REBORN!”

  9. Have never seen the Tudors, and I don’t plan to watch.  I like that he’s unknown to me, and I’m going to keep it that way until December 2012.  Looking forward to this!!

  10. UPDATED with two more images of Cavill from this week’s EW, fresh from my mailbox.

  11. It really should be a crime to be that good looking.

  12. Again I’d like to see footage before really any judging.

But I will say that…..I don’t see Superman in this actor, but I’m sure Snyder is going to make it work.

  13. Wow, how handsome is he? Is that even legal?

Can’t wait to see him after he hits the weight room!

  14. @CaeuZokul  It may be (technically) legal but it certainly ‘ain’t fair!

  15. Okay, that is definitely one amazing-looking man.

  16. Man, he looks a lot like Matt Bomer from USA’s White Collar.

Who was also up for the part, according to the rumor mill.

  17. as long as he can pull of a yank accent…
