Happy Fourth of July 2011!

As those of you in the US know, today is the Fourth of July, the national holiday celebrating the United States independence. As such, we're taking today off, so if you came here looking for comics news, come back tomorrow! We'll also have the new comics for this week for your pull lists on Tuesday, July 5th.  But not to worry, comics will still ship and be in stores on Wednesday, July 6th.

For those of you in the US, happy Fourth of July! Be safe out there and don't get hurt blowing things up.  For those of you outside of the U.S., enjoy Monday!

And now I leave you one of my favorite moments of patriotism, fireworks, and blowing things up. Complete with a catchy 1980s style theme song:

Comments

  1. This is Everything Anyone needs to celebrate the 4th of July.

  2. nice, I’m going to eat so much i’m already feeling ashamed. happy fouth guys

  3. Thas right Cobra.  Get off my Statue of Liberty!  Is the shiny metal face dude who calls the Cobra retreat voiced by the same guy as the 80’s cartoon transformer’s Star Scream?  Sounds a lot alike.

Happy we ain’t British Day everyone!

  4. That intro gave me chills the first time I saw it as a kid.

  5. @ diebenny I always said that Starscream and Cobra Commander were essentially the same character.

  6. If only the rest of the movie had been as cool as this intro.

  7. Happy Independence Day my fellow American Fanboys!! TMC airing Yankee Doodle Dandy with Cagney, or maybe we will watch a Michael Bay flick.

  8. That opening is still awesome today, though still to this day any time I think og the Gi Joe movie I think of Sgt. Slaughter screaming grab my ankles.

  9. Cooooobbrrraaaaaaaaa!

  10. Hmmm… I’ve got my Cap and Superman trades ready to go, but I still may need a patriotic movie that doesn’t stink. Help me, Ifanbase!

  11. The Trouble Bubble…that brings back memories. Wow…that was spectacular. Thanks Ron.

  12. Happy Monday everyone!

I will be watching the film Independence Day at the very least.

  13. Duke must have a red, white and blue tatooed ball bag. He picked the bomb up with 7 seconds left. And why don’t we have jetpacks yet? Happy 4th!

  14. @CaseyJustice: Iron Man, Superman 2 or Top Gun.

  15. going to work

  16. So much to love about this intro but that extended Cobra crotch shot was unnecessary.

  17. Hey guys, you should check out this fan film called  The Flash Heroes Are Born, it’s a pretty cool little movie. Support the geeks! Happy 4th.

  18. If you guys have not seen it definitely watch G.I. Joes Resolute.

  19. You guys rule.

  20. As much as I love this clip, I have *so* many questions about it:
    – Why did G.I. Joe wait so long to fight back at Cobra? If they were all sitting there in the Statue of Liberty, why didn’t they spring right as soon as Cobra started attacking? They could have at least saved that poor cameraman’s video camera.

    – Why is Cobra Commander the one planting the bomb on the Statue of Liberty? I mean, he’s their leader – surely there’s a minion who can do it and Cobra Commander can stay in safety on the ship. Also, note that the timer is set to 5 minutes when he takes off and when he plants the bomb, it’s set to 3 minutes, so it took him 2 minutes to jetpack down to the statue.

    – Why does Duke wait until there’s mere seconds to get rid of the bomb? I mean, it sat there FOREVER – you’d think that would be a priority to get rid of. And he grabs it with 9 seconds left, and is able to fly it BACK up to Cobra’s ship, a trip that took Cobra Commander 2 minutes, takes Duke about 7 seconds. Does he have a better jet pack? He plants the bomb with 2 seconds left and is clear of the blast radius within 2 seconds? Seems unlikely

    – Who is General Hawk shooting at? It seems as if he’s just randomly firing into the air

    – What was Cobra’s objective here? To blow up the Statue of Liberty or what? seems like one well placed missle could have done the trick as opposed to the insane melee that they started

    – Why are there so many balloons? I know it was the 1980s but didn’t we figure out that balloons were bad for dolphins, or something like that, by then?

I probably should stop there – but man, amazing how just a few minutes can cause SO many questions…

  21. Iron Man sounds good for tonight.

  22. That was just amazing

  23. @Ron WHAT’S IN THE CLOSET?!?

  24. @ron  That was the greatest analysis of a cartoon segment EVER!

    Happy 4th everyone!

  25. @ron wow you payed way to close of attention to the details in that opening sequence

  26. @jmack  I feel ya, dood. I worked blocks away from the Macy’s Fireworks, sigh.

I LOVED this!!! When i was a kid i taped this song to an audio cassette so i could hear it over and over again. Awesome! YO, JOE!!!!!

  27. Nemesis Enforcer would’ve crushed Sgt Slaughter, that part ruined it for me! Jk, sort of.

  28. I’m so glad I grew up as a 90’s kid. Our cartoons aged better. Nyah.

  29. @ Tork as a child of the 90s you would have grown up with the MC Hammer cartoon

  30. @Tork  @Walter  Plus the New Kids on the Block cartoon. And next time you think 90s cartoon aged well, go rewatch X-men.

  31. X-Men actually aged fairly well at least compared to 80’s cartoons. Plus, we had Batman and Gargoyles which are awesome for all ages to this very day.
