Great Moments in Comics History: Vision and The Scarlet Witch #1

“Yes, Wanda. People are staring at you because they might be bigots. It’s not because a woman in full cape and headdress is driving in a classic car aside her husband, a synthezoid, whose garish outfit of greens and yellows is topped by a bizarrely cherry-red face.” – Jeff R., who submitted this one.

  1. Maybe they’re staring because someone named “Vision” just drove through the grass?

  2. Not to mention the kind of car they are driving in….and by all apearances they just drove through the grass to cut off that truck.

  3. looks like he’s driving one of those Zimmer neo classic cars..(aka the pimp car). Also he has a pimp cape.

  4. Maybe they are wondering if his next visit to the dentist will whiten his teeth.

  5. They should have moved to a state that looked more kindly on Robosexual relationships…like Vermont.

  6. “Being mutant” isn’t even in the top ten of reasons people are staring at you.

  7. This was the book that got me to cross over from Transformers and GI Joe into super-hero comics. Marvel ran alot of adds for this miniseries, coupled with the new West Coast Avengers ongoing. As a kid who didn’t know much about comics, all those characters had the craziest costumes. The best was when Vision would wear polo shirts with his cherry red arms hanging out.

  8. I’m sure this is from an Avengers issue, but it reminds of the two excellent “Vision and the Scarlet Witch” minis from the early 1980s by Bill Mantlo, Steve Englehart, Rick Leonardi, Richard Howell, and others. These were formative Marvel Comics for your humble narrator.

    • These panels are specifically from Vision and the Scarlet Witch #1, which was written by Steve Englehart and penciled by Richard Howell. It was recently reprinted in a hardcover titled Avengers: West Coast Avengers – Family Ties.

  9. Awesome. Love 70s/80s Vision.

  10. OK, I assuming that cut off sign reads “Borough of Fort Lee”. However there is no reasonable way the “OUGH” fits. One can only assumes the letters get small and twist downwards, like when my 4 year old writes her name in giant letters and realizes only as she approaches the edge of the page that she has a problem.

  11. Comics were very strange in the 1980s.

    • You think 80s comics were strange? Try reading 60s Marvel. I have read entire issues of Fantastic Four that could make up a Great moments in comics History post. Did you know that the FF used to talk to Sue like she was their maid and secretary, and actually TOLD HER they keep her on the team, even though she’s useless, because having a cute chick around raises moral?

Did you know that general Thunderbolt Ross kept a collection of leather bound phone books in his office???? And the Thing ripped them to shreds in a fit of rage, ruining Ross’s day??? seriously, 60s Marvel is the best thing EVER.

But back to the post at hand…. LOVE this one! The idea of heroes in full costume driving recklessly and then wondering why people are staring is just hilarious.
