Great Moments in Comics History: Spawn #5

What no one realizes is that the real reason that all of the original Image Comics partners got so rich was because they were paid by the word.

Comments

  1. I’m visualizing an issue that takes 4 hours to read. No, thank you.

  2. Was this when Spawn was actually worth looking at?

  3. @harwellpkg  Spawn was really never worth looking at.

  4. That initial arc was great. The Kincaid death-scene page was another really excellent moment from that story.

  5. you are cured,
    BILLY KINCAID.

  6. @ActualButt  This is from the first issues, when spawn was about something more and he made cultural impact in comics… Spawn was at it best until issue 100

  7. I love the people who love the sound of thier own voice!

  8. This page looks FANTASTIC in the deluxe hardcover edition! Can’t wait for book 3 to come out so i can get the issues where he has the “new” costume!

  9. This was a great first story arc.  It made my skin crawl.  By the time Kincaid was dead, I was cheering.

  10. Those connected word-ballons are truly….advantageous!!!!

  11. oh yeah that brings me back. NIcely designed page.

Just curous ifanboys….i know you guys talk a lot on the podcasts about pages that get “too wordy” how does something like this fit into that conversation?

  12. I was just talking about this last week on the Spawn #200 pull. Those early spawn comics were the wordiest of the wordy.

  13. Were this a modern comic, the same amount of text would be there but it would just be divided over 30 copy & pasted panels of Kincaid’s face looking impassive.

  14. Getting to this page must be like flipping over the sunday comics and reading Prince Valiant. My brain could never sit still.

  15. There’s this amazing splash page from when Claremont rejoined X-Men in the early 2000s I think. I haven’t been able to find it, but it has about 6 years of text. Like a full amount of dinner party conversation occuring in one panel where the x-Men are FLYING THROUGH A SKYLIGHT ON MOTORCYCLES.

THEY ARE HAVING A 10 MINUTE CONVERSATION on an action page of them crashing through a roof on motorcycles!

It was one of the worst things I have ever seen.

  16. Complaints if it takes a long time to read, complaints if it takes two minutes to read. They can’t win. 😉

  17. @ResurrectionFlan  Yay I found it:

  18. The next page in this issue is a two-page spread of Spawn crouched on top of a church – all cape and chains and whatnot. Not a word balloon to be seen, though.

  19. This was a great issue.

  20. Todd McFarlane draws fat guy faces like nobody’s business!

  21. Loved that issue.  The first 20 or so issues of Spawn were so much fun

  22. I think I have 4-5 copies of this issue.  Ahh the 90’s!
