Employ All Monsters! IDW Announces GODZILLA: MONSTER WORLD!

"King Kong aint got nothin' on me!" — Denzel Washington, emulating Godzilla

After a painfully long absence, the greatest kaiju of all time is returning to comics. This March, IDW is set to unveil Godzilla: Monster World, an all new ongoing comic series starring everybody's favorite radioactive cautionary tail. As the subtitle implies, the King of all Monsters will not be alone. Say goodbye to your favorite public utilities because the skyline is about to be dominated by the likes of Rodan, King Ghidorah, and Mothra, as well as a whole host of giant monsters who've never seen print on American shores.

All this mayhem and destruction comes at the hands of writer Eric Powell (The Goon), Tracy Marsh, and artist Phil Hester! Powell and Alex Ross will each provide a cover for each issue.

All sanctioned by Toho!

Here's what IDW has to say:

"In GODZILLA®: MONSTER WORLD, a full-scale apocalypse is brewing. The monsters are a force of nature whose attacks can be no more predicted or rationalized than a lightning strike. There will be no clean-cut heroes with perfectly chiseled chins and capes billowing in the wind; only ordinary human beings struggling desperately to survive in a world gone mad.

"With an impressive cast of monsters both old and new, IDW’s series will treat fans to both familiar themes and original takes on the pop culture legends that have stomped, smashed, and fought their way across movie screens for over four decades."

That's right. Godzilla gets the R in the circle after His name. Because he's not a businessman. He's a business, man!

While Raymond Burr is no doubt spinning in his grave, this particular kaiju fanatic is ecstatic. Long live the King!

UPDATE: IDW was kind enough to send along a pair of images from Eric Powell!

From left to right (if i'm not horribly mistaken): Kumonga, Rodan, Mothra in larva form, Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Anguirus

Comments

  1. Yes!  Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Rodan, Gigan, Mechagodzilla. I’m just listing things now.

Will the lettering be poorly done to simulate the horrific/funny dubbing of the English-language releases.

  2. I had to delete SEVERAL potential comments because they were all some variation of either “OH MY GODDDDDDDDDD!”, “YES! YES! YESSSSSSSSSS!”, and “I CAN BARELY CONTAIN MYSELF!!!”

So anyway, this is surely going to be a fuOH MY GOD I CANT WAIT FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. SOLD!

  4. I found a stray Godzilla comic in a pile of old Marvel stuff just the other day. Reminded me just how much I love all the Godzilla mythology. CAN’T WAIT!

  5. It would be awesome if the book was oversized like Frank Miller and Jeff Darrow’s “The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot.” The Big G can’t be contained in a a small-assed normal comic.

  6. Well done on that opening quote, Paul. That made me smile.

  7. We need an arc with Biollante. He’s not only one of the coolest monsters, but also one of the most severely underused.

  8. Awe-freaking-some.  I’m really curious to see what Powell and Hester does with this.

  9. And Marsh, don’t forget Marsh. Co-writing.

  10. I am all over this.

  11. Aw Man I’ve been waiting for this ever since it was announced! I’m sure Powell and Marsh will get right to the heart of some awesome monster mayhem!

  12. SWEET!  Now, we just need a new Planet of the Apes ongoing…

  13. Bring on Jet Jaguar!

  14. Ya know, this one hooked me because of Paul’s article.  I want to see monsters SMASH now lol!

  15. UPDATED with some additional images from Eric Powell!

  16. I hope those tiny singing twin fairies from Godzilla vs Mothra are in this.

  17. @cubsmodano  Yes! We need an Apes series. I’ll even volunteer to write and draw it. Stick figures cool with you all?

  18. I think that RipperSix is happy today.

  19. I have been waiting my entire life for this book.

  20. Finally, something I can get behind!

  21. I knew the moment I saw this title @comicbookchris would go insane.

It has a pretty good creative team on board for it. Definitely will give the first issue a try, even though I am not the biggest Godzilla fan in the world.

  22. Alex Ross’ cover looks OK.  I would have preferred the traditional blue atomic ray.

Eric Powell does a nice job with the other kaiju in the bottom illustration, but his Godzilla could be alot better.  Wierd that of all the monsters, he’s the one that looks most off.

Not that I won’t be reading this line, mind you.  I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Now if only Legendary would start making some significant announcements regarding their movie….

  23. Eric Powell writing a comic starring a giant monster? Ummmmm… can I have this now, please?

Seriously, I love Godzilla, have since I was a kid and WOR ran Black Friday marathons of the flicks, and even have a box full of late 90s toys out in the storage shed. So over this. Just as long as they don’t reprint Godzilla vs. Barkley.

  24. apocalypse now !

  25. I hope the giant lobster from Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster shows up!!  He’s my favorite!!

  26. I just watched the original Gojira! SOLD!

  27. Oh no! There goes Tokyo..Go,Go Godzilla…ohwooo. Sorry, someone had to say it. Looks great. Powell is pefect for this.

  28. @kingdomofevan  Amen! I would kill for that to happen as that is the Godzilla movie I watched the most as a kid for some reason.

“I guess he decided his job was done. But still, I reckon he’d do it again, if the need ever rose again.”

  29. Hell yeah. And it’s Ebirah.

  30. Hester is going to kill on this book.  Straight up murder.
