COMICS TV: Showtime + David Goyer to bring 100 Bullets to Television

Big day for comic related television news.  First the POWERS casting news, and now Deadline is reporting that Showtime will be working with David S. Goyer to bring Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's 100 Bullets to the small screen. Deadline is reporting that Goyer is slated to write and executive produce the show.

David S. Goyer is well known in Hollywood as *the* guy when it comes to comic book adaptations.  His previous writing work on the Blade movies was a fan favorite, but he reached commercial success by co-writing Batman Begins with Christopher Nolan, as well as co-writing the story for The Dark Knight and the upcomic The Dark Knight Rises.  He's also credited with writing the story and screenplay for the upcoming Superman movie directed by Zach Snyder.  He also could be played by Stanley Tucci if they ever make a movie about his career.

Fans of 100 Bullets will recall the epic 100 issue run by Azzarello and Risso, with covers by Dave Johnson as one of the legendary titles of the Vertigo line that has a life long after the series has ended in trade paperback form.  It's violence and gritty stories seem like a perfect fit for cable TV, and Showtime appears to be making some real forays into comic adaptations with this, as well as developing the Image Comics title Chew for TV.

Comments

  1. could be good. LOST season II good or not

  2. OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

Seriously, what awesome news! I don’t even have showtime, but I’ll throw it on my already too expensive for me to afford package.

  3. The initial premise is TV magic.

The grizzled stranger in a suit.  The briefcase.  The untraceable gun, 100 bullets, carte blanche, damning evidence, and… a choice.

The ways that can spin, the ways it did spin in the book, and the ways they could spin it still to innovate for the TV series are wonderfully morbid, human, wicked, and even possibly inspiring.

The larger on-going conspiratorial story seems a lot more iffy for a general audience.  I enjoyed it still, but on subsequent rereads I’ve had to power through it more than the earlier volumes.  The potential for this series is pretty exciting.

  4. Showtime series right now are as good if nor better than half of HBO’s and those two networks and a select few other stations like AMC for Breaking Bad and Walking Dead, Nat Geo, Discovery, Food Network, History, TLC (I like informative channels), G4 for ATOS and soon FX for POWERS. Dexter, Californication, Weeds, The Tudors, United States of Tara, and Nurse Jackie are all good from Showtime. Trueblood, Entourage, Real Time With Bill Maher, Boardwalk Empire are good on HBO and I’ve heard King of Thrones is good too. I DVR the stuff, watch it on demand or rent the volumes then watch em like one big movie(best way) or I wouldn’t have time to see em all and sometimes don’t but I gotta have time for comix too right!!!

  5. This is where warner brother shines in tv and animated.

  6. delicious

  7. I don’t know if it’ll actually translate well. I don’t mean to be a naysayers, but honestly, the story is VERY complex, and when it starts getting deeper, it might throw off a lot of audience members. I’m rooting for it, because I love it, and I would love LOVE LOVE for Risso and Azz to get money for their brilliant work.

  8. Dream Casting:
    -Michelle Rodriguez as Dizzy
    -Robert Patrick as Agent Graves
    -Eric Close as Mr. Shepherd
    -Josh Holloway as Wylie Times

And the list goes on and on…

  9. Fantastic !, they should have made this a tv show years ago

  10. Yes please!  Although I think Y would make a better show, this is great news.  I hope it’s successful enough to finish, probably take somewhere between 3-5 seasons to fit everything in.

  11. This is great news. 100 Bullets will make for a great show. Nice to see that they will be able to tell the story the way it should be on Showtime.

  12. It’s cool that this is being turned into a show. Although I did get bored of the series after the 4th-5th trade. Hopefully this turns out to be good.

(Although lets be honest, I’d rather have an anthology based show with a man handing people the 100 Bullets then the government conspiracy that Azzarello turned it into)

  13. Flashforward

  14. Ooh, this is cool news.  And the above comment with Robert Patrick as Graves…hell yeah!

  15. great news.

  16. Soon there’s going to be a series based Walking Dead, Powers, Chew, and 100 Bullets all on the air at the same time. And hopefully the later three should be good since they’re going to be on quality channels like Showtime and FX. Hopefullt these all turn out well and are successes. Maybe there’s a chance that a trend could start and we get more made like those Preacher, Fables, and Y: The Last Man shows that were in development before.

  17. This is great news. Wonder if this will have the larger conspiracy story or be a bunch of one-and-dones? Or both? If people could hang in for Lost after all the crazy mid-stream changes in writers and story, I think the viewing audience could handle the larger story of this. Especially if it’s a slow reveal. Can’t wait, and I like the casting speculation so far. Let me add:

-Michael Madsen as Lono (I always thought of him when reading Lono)
    -Traci Lords as Megan Dietrich

  18. Christina Hendricks as Megan Dietrich.
Josh Holloway as Wylie is fantastic

  19. I’ve only read the first trade, but this series would work well on TV, it has a Twilight Zone feel to it.

  20. Just seeing these characters come to life would be incredible. It would defintely have to be different from the comic, but the compelling story is there.
