Coach Taylor– I mean, Kyle Chandler Offered Christian Walker

Deadline is reporting that, in a shocking rebuke of Ron Richards’ casting suggestions, FX and the producers of Powers are driving hard to the goal line to try to land former Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler to play Detective Christian Walker.

Deadline specifically mentions that casting Chandler is considered “a long shot” (just like the East Dillion Lions!), but that the current rewrite on the Powers pilot script is going to incorporate Chandler’s notes. (The rewrite was going to happen anyway.) According to Deadline’s source, Chandler is not going to make a decision either way on taking the role until he reads the next draft of the script.

It’s clear that Powers wants Kyle Chandler but does he want Powers? We’ll know shortly, I guess. When we talked to Powers co-creator Brian Michael Bendis in Chicago he said that pre-production on the pilot was moving rapidly and it is noted in the article that FX is eyeing Powers to debut in early 2012.

If Chandler does take the role, he will be joining other Friday Night Lights alumnus in the super hero realm — Adrianne Palicki (Tyra Collette) is currently playing Wonder Woman, Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins) (swoon) played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Brea Grant (Jean Binnel) played Daphne Millbrook on Heroes.

  1. Swoon, indeed.

  2. LOVE Coach Taylor.  Think he’s a good fit for Christian Walker.  A little worried about why he’d want input on a rewrite because my precious Powers is perfect and no one should be tweaking it in any way, but I’ll get over that, and for all I know Chandler’s ideas are great.  I am cautiously unreasonably excited.

  3. Coach Taylor rocks. Woooo

  4. I would be a-ok with Coach Taylor!

  5. Coach Taylor FTW!

  6. I’d be more than totally okay for this!

Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose!

  7. I just pictured Coach Taylor reacting to young Calista asking “What’s a clitoris?” in that first issue the same way he’d react to Tammy totally usting him on something and it was perfect.  If the fine people at FX would like to swing by my house and extract that image from my brain, I think we’ve got a hit here.

  8. *busting, dammit

  9. When is the Mike Romo casting gonna be announced?

  10. I squealed inside like a little girl.

  11. Does that mean Walker will give inspiring speeches, if Chandler is cast? I love Friday Night Lights (it’s been the best show on TV for the 5 years it’s been on) and when I saw the 8MM trailer I was really excited to see him in it, but I’m not sure if he’s right to play Walker. I’ll be watching it either way.

  12. If he is cast, he will get tomorrow’s headlines, today. Anybody besides me watch Early Edition?

  13. Good deal.

    Matthew

  14. Not what I had in mind. But I think it would be great.

  15. @Duraflametree  That’s where I first became a fan of Chandler.

Flash Fact: I learned Screenwriting 101 from the creator of Early Edition.

  17. honestly, i think the role of Deena Pilgrim will be tougher to find the right actress for

  18. powers forever, six.

  19. I loved Early Edition and also Kyle Chandler’s guest spot on Grey’s. And I hate to admit it, but Taylor Kitsch is so swoony I have watched 3 seasons of FNL in just over a week!

  20. That would be amazing.  Siiiiiiiigh.

  21. @AbeFroman  Do not hate to admit it, Josh and I regularly argue over who has a bigger man-crush on Riggins.

  22. You know, Brea Grant might actually be a decent choice for Deena. She’s the perfect physical type for the part, and from what I’ve seen of her work, she has the right attitude or can play it.

But to echo what everyone else is saying: YES. Coach Taylor FTW! EAST! EAST! EAST! Clear eyes, full hearts CAN’T LOSE!

And Riggins is simply dreamy. Definite man crush. He also cracks me up in the first season, because that’s when his Canadian accent seriously pushes through his put-on Texas accent. Hysterical.

  23. @conor  Nice to know I’m not alone.  @PaulMontogomery  Did you find that out later, or was it part of his introduction to the class?

@Duraflametree  I knew prior to the class. He’s also the department head. In one class he shared the story of his series pitch. Went like this: It was around the time of the OJ trials, and he’d placed a specially printed newspaper on the table with the outcome of the trial as its headline. It was labeled with the next day’s date. He let the executives sort of find the paper on their own, so it became a conversation piece before the meeting even started. Then he said, “What if you opened your door each morning to find tomorrow’s newspaper?”

  25. Slightly off-topic, but when was Brea Grant on FNL?

  26. @BC1 – She was Landry’s sort of love interest in season 2.

  27. @PaulMontgomery  Awesome story.  I would never have thought OJ Simpson had anything to do with Early Edition.  Thanks for sharing.

  28. @Duraflametree Loved Early Edition. I wonder what’s that cat doing now. Oh right, Early Edition was in the 90’s, so it’s probably dead by now. 🙁

  29. Wow I didn’t know that Bravo did a comic book site.

  30. This could work. He’s a talented guy.

  31. @TomE  Whenever the paper came in the morning, I was always hoping my cat would be on top of it.  He never wanted to do it though.

  32. Kyle Chandler aka Coach Taylor “FNL” and Gary Hobson “EE” would be great in this part, but would it be good for Kyle Chandler? Personally I would love him to film in the Chicago area again, but that would be selfish on my part. If “Powers” were a movie and not a TV series I would really want Kyle Chandler to take it. I am just afraid it will be a step back if he takes another series on TV. He has the opportunity to grow as a star in movies RIGHT NOW. The time is right for Kyle Chandler. He is a STAR and deserves a classic starring role in a classic movie. Jayne Kyle Chandler Fan Club on Facebook.
