Chris Evans Talks THE LOSERS, SCOTT PILGRIM, CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE AVENGERS

Chris EvansOver at ScreenStar, Chris Evans gave a quick interview that hit upon his four comic book films: The Losers, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The First Avenger: Captain America, and The Avengers.

Here are some highlights:

On The Losers:

We're not reinventing the wheel with the plot, and neither were the movies in the '80s, that were so successful, like Lethal Weapon and the Die Hard movies, where you have to really like, not just the characters, but the characters' interactions with each other.  And this movie, I think, accomplishes that based on the fact that we all really — really — got along off set.

On Scott Pilgrim vs. The World:

That was a fantastic time.  My only frustration with that movie was that my part was so small.  I was there in the beginning doing rehearsals and training with the cast, but then I left for about a month and a half.  Then I came back and we filmed my character for about three weeks, maybe four, and then I left again, and they kept filming for another two months.  It was so sad because I'd been having such an amazing time.

On playing Captain America:

I came down on the side of going for it because I really think Marvel is doing some great things these days, the script is great and it's going to be a fun character to play.  He's a wonderful character, just as a man, aside from the comic hero background.  If it was just a story about the man, Steve Rogers, I'd be really interested.

On The Avengers:

This is obviously going to be a very time-consuming ordeal, not just with Captain America, but with The Avengers.  They'll shoot back to back.  The shoots are long.  The press is very time-consuming.  It's going to be very tricky.  These are all the things I've had to try and weigh.

Comments

  1. They should have an FF and Avengers crossover where he plays both Cap and Johnny.

  2. @AmirCat And the stand-ins they use are horrible and look completely different. There should also be a lot of scenes where Cap and Johnny talk to each other and they do really dodgy split screen.

  3. It is kinda funny how Evan’s is going to spend most of his time as Captain America.

From now to possibly, what? 2013? He’s going to be in that costume for a long time. Wonder if he took that into considering before accepting the job.

  4. @TNC: You didn’t read the interview, did you?

  5. @conor: I did…..and then immediately forgot that’s exactly what he said.

    Whoops.

  6. He is to movies what Wolverine or Deadpool are to comics. He is getting so much work. I’m happy for him and I hope The Cap movie is badass.

  7. I liked him as Human Torch, I hate the idea of him playing Captain America seeing how he will give the exact same performance. Lazy Casting.

  8. Why would he give the same performance? They’re completely different char-

Wait…have you guys ever noticed that Cap and Human Torch are never in the same room at the same time?

  9. because he’s a one dimensional actor…

  10. That’s cool. I really like Evans, and am glad he got the part, it’s really cool to see that he realizes he’s taking on a huge part, but that he’s smart to know that this will help him. Loved him in the Losers and can’t wait for Cap.

  11. @Conor and TNC: that was very, very funny

  12. @wallythegreenmonsterI think that’s ridiculously harsh. The guy has been good in pretty much everything he’s done. He was the only casting choice that was perfect in the FF movies, he was excellent in Sunshine and hilarious in Not Another Teen Movie. I think this coupled with his obvious enthusiam for the projects he’s involved in mean he should at the very least be given the benefit of the doubt.

  13. Thank God that him as captain america pretty much ends the Fantastic Four movies

  14. I like how humble he is about it. He’s not one of those OH YEAH I’M REALLY EXCITED TO PLAY IT, I HAD ONE OF THEM CAPTAIN AMERICA FUNNY BOOKS WHEN I WAS A KID AND I LOVED IT THEN AND WOW DREAM COME TRUE GUYS REALLY.

  15. @davidtobin100

sorry you think i’m harsh. I just think its an typical lazy Hollywood casting. You pick the guy of the moment who’s done something similar and ask him to repeat his performance with a different costume. Its a recipe for disaster. I still think its a bad idea to have the same guy play two cornerstone Golden Age marvel characters.

I liked him as Human Torch. I think he’ll play Cap the same way. He’s more suited to play Bucky than Captain American IMO. He doesn’t really come off as heroic and at best is a smart a$$ sidekick kinda guy. I don’t think he has the presence or star power to be an affective Captain America.

I’m just incredibly disappointed. I’ve been waiting for a real Captain America movie for a very very very long time, and now that its being made, i’m so not excited about it.

At least they didn’t cast Shia LaBEEF or Channing Tatum.

  16. Why do you assume he’ll act like Johnny Storm while playing Captain America?  It goes completely against the character and everything we’ve heard so far about the movie.

There’s a difference between being typecast and being a one dimensional actor.  Have you only seen him in wisecracking roles?  That might be why you only think of him as a wisecracker.

  17. The majority of things i’ve seen him in he plays the same kind of guy and I just don’t see how he’ll translate what he’s good at into a good Captain America. Maybe he’ll do really well and surprise everyone. I’m a fan of Captain America and I’m not excited in any way for this movie strictly because of the casting. Thats my opinion and i’m sticking to it. =p

  18. I guess I’m more of a wait and see guy, I’d rather give people the benefit of the doubt until I see some actual footage.

Marvel’s been doing a great job with their Marvel Studio movies so far and everything I’ve been hearing makes it sound like they’re doing a good job with Thor, IM 2, Cap and the Avengers.

Lots of people doubted RDJ and Heath Ledger too, and look how those turned out.

  19. Chris Evans must really like comic book movies!

  20. @wallythegreenmonster,

You must not have seen Sunshine.

  21. Well, I’m going to stay optimisitic in my hope for these movies. I don’t think George Clooney or Liam Niesson had much gravitas in their charecters when they first started playing on the big screen. Now look at them, they add so much weight to movies. My point is, one does not instantly have a certain weight to them when they come into the acting biz; it is something that is learned over time. Maybe in the course of working on the movies for marvel he will learn. And if not, at least we get to an attempt right.

  22. At least it isn’t Sam Worthington, who I like but is in everything right now
