Cartoon Network’s Thunder…Thunder…THUNDERCATS Trailer…HO!

Cartoon Network has released a trailer for their new ThunderCats series, available via their Facebook page. Thunder! Thunder! ThunderCats! Hoooooooo!!!!

To view it in HD, make sure to check it out on the Facebook page. Either way, very impressive. It looks like the Battle of Helms Deep with cat people!

While we've seen a number of clips, character designs, and even toys prior to this trailer, we finally have a stitch of narrative. This new series jettisons the old concept of a dying home planet and the flight to refuge on Third Earth. There is no Thundera here. We begin on Third Earth, where the catlike masses have thrived for ages (fully clothed, unlike Thundera of the 80s). So Mumm-Ra and the reptilian mutants are an active presence from the start. In fact, ol' Slithe seems to be leading a siege against the ThunderCats' kingdom with a shock troop of mutants and CG mechs.

As for the ensemble? A youthful Lion-O is voiced by Will Friedle (Batman Beyond, Boy Meets World), and the classic battle cry is well served. His father King Claudus (Larry Kenney, the original voice of Lion-O) is still kicking around, ensuring significant changes to Lion-O's rise to power this time out. Tigra and Cheetara also turn up with signature weapons and acrobatics. Wily Kit and Wily Kat? Double check. Panthro is absent here, but we know he'll join the ensemble sooner than later. Grave Merlin figure Jaga narrates the piece. As for Snarf? Miraculously silent.

And the Sword of Omens? It's back, a sight for sore eyes beyond sight!

It all looks very impressive for a remake of a toy peddling 80s cartoon, with enough inventive revisions to make it feel fresh and worthwhile. I will absolutely be watching. With DC's increased involvement at Cartoon Network, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some comics too. And if you value your sanity, you'll all pretend they're the first ThunderCats comics to be produced. Because what's out there is…let's go with abominable

ThunderCats airs on Cartoon Network this Fall.

Comments

  1. I’ve always loved Thundercats. It was my favourite series growing up. I recently watched the DVD’s and it didnt carry as well as I thought it would. This should be more updated.

    Hopefully it is good.

  2. Thundercats is a favorite of mine, as well as my wife. We will both be watching when this starts!

  3. Hell yes!!!! This looks like a revision done right.

  4. Umm, where is Panthro?

@marshak75  He’s in the series (there’s an action figure, and he’s voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson), he’s just not in this trailer. Maybe he joins the ensemble after the pilot?

  6. There wasa HUGE T-cats push in comics a few years back, with Ed McGuiness and J. Campbell and everything! And they were… comics. We can say that, to be sure. That said, I still share a tender moment once in a while with the Superman crossover issue.

  7. i like it good revisioning and it give the the Tcats a reason to fight for third earth (besides the code) and not be space invader out to push their views on other.

  8. My understanding at the Panel was that at some point a planet was going to explode and another thing is going to happen, that maybe I shouldn’t say because they didn’t think they should have said it.

Either way I’m finally getting more Thundercats and I can’t wait!

@CaseyJustice – I really liked the Return of the King mini. Ed Benes on art and a much more mature storyline.

@jmstump  If they said it, you can share it!

  10. @jmstump – are you refering to Thundera or something new and different?

  11. I don’t know if it’s just me….but that looked EPIC!

  14. Very excited about this! Toatally ready to keep an open mind about the changes to the old story.

Speaking of which, there HAS to be a Thundera right? I mean its the EYE of THUNDERA. I bet thats going to be part of an ongoing plot thread in the new series. SO EXCITED!!

  15. Was too young to really remember the original, but this looks DOPE.

  16. Five year old me is stoked, 31 years old me is ecstatic. Are we seriously getting an awesome remake of Thundercats? Apparently we are.
