Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan on CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1

If these Dark Horse solicits are to be believed, and I think they are, the team behind Demo will be going all kinds of sword and sorcery with Conan the Barbarian #1. The series will be written by Brian Wood, adapted from Robert E. Howard’s Queen of the Black Coast story, where Conan takes to the seas as a pirate. Art will be provided by the recently un-Doomed Becky Cloonan, who can draw in any style anyone wants ever, and it will look better than you hoped. Colors will come courtesy of Dark Horse’s secret weapon, Dave Stewart, and covers will be done by Massimo Carnivale, who is just now in the running for one of the best names in comics. Wood and Cloonan also did an arc on the Vertigo series Northlanders, and this setting isn’t all that far off from that thematically, so it’s got promise.

This first issue is due out on February 8, and will likely involve killing lots of dudes with swords, by Crom.

Comments

  1. The combo of Demon Knights and Skyrim has me really itching to read more fantasy based ongoing books. Add that to Brian and Becky, and I think I have my first Conan book.

  2. This sounds (and looks) top-rate! I’m officially lining up for this one.

  3. Every dark horse Conan book is quality…. but this… with Wood on it!
Now thats something to look forward to.

  4. Ummmm… fuck yeah?

  5. Stewart’s colors continue to be delicious.

  6. This is such a great idea. Looking forward to picking up Conan again.

  7. This is an incredible team. Can’t wait!

  8. My favorite book of all time is the old ‘Savage Sword’ B&W mag, Thomas and Buscema. Glad to see they’ve maintained the haircut, somewhat.

    • I spent quite a few hours and dollars tracking all those savage swords down a few years back.. and when i completed the task i was left with the much more mammoth undertaking of actually reading them. Ill get around to it one day. Hundreds of giant issues… its like choosing to fight Conan.
I just have to leave them to last cause i know i wont be able to read anything else while trying to finish those.

    • Those Savage Sword books just hit all the right notes for comic reading- adventure, romance, combat, etc. They even smell better than today’s publications. It is quite a task to plow through all these, but I envy you getting to read them for the first time!

  9. Probably the most excited comic news this year (to me at least). I’m a big Conan fan and this creative team is going to be awesome, I can’t wait!

  10. Will this comic know what is good in life?
    I think it will

  11. “… and will likely involve killing lots of dudes with swords, by Crom.”

    Dude!
    Spoilers!!!

  12. I think I’m gonna pick this up then read it while listening to Basil De Polidorius’ Soundtrack for the original Conan movie. EPIC!

  13. Would this be a good jumping on point for someone totally new to the Conan Universe?
Or would it be better to have some knowledge before diving in to it, since there are so many Conan stories out there…

    • Conan is a book that relies very very very little on continuity. This is a great jumping on point.

    • Ya most conan books are self contained. No need to know a lot of back story. I would imagine it would be a good jumping on point.
On another note.. there hasnt been a conan comic that ive read that hasnt been better than that awful summer conan movie.. WOW .. what a stinker.

    • At first, it was just another Jason Momoa cult. Now, they are everywhere. It is said they murder people in the night. I know nothing!

    • If you can find the ‘The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian’, published by Del Rey- it’s a great collection of Howard’s Conan stories. There are a few others in the series, but that’s a good place to start. Howard’s ‘El Borak’ stories are killer, too!

  14. Consider this in my preorder list 🙂

  15. Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I’m still bummed about Northlanders, but Brian Wood on Conan has made my day. Wood and Cloonan work well together, this is going to be nice.

  17. Looks fantastic

  18. I’m adding this to my pull at my LCS. This totally makes up for not getting a Teen Doom miniseries. I would much rather read this book anyway, so take that Marvel, nyah nyah!

  19. Looks cool, but I already have way too much Conan. Glad you guys are excited by this. Everybody can’t buy everything, and this looks like it will be pretty good.

  20. wow! I havent picked up a new dark horse Conan book for a little more than a year now, but I’ll definitely be on board for this. Its actually nice to see so many comments here on this already and hopefully the enthusiasm will carry over to the comments section of these individual comics when they come out. This is really so cool! the more I think about it, I’m getting more excited about the character of Conan in general. I think I’ll be diving into my Savage Sword ‘phone-book’ collections and maybe get some of the more recent back issues/trades I’ve missed in the last year or so!

  21. Does anyone know if this is going to replace the current series? The series launched by Busiek and Nord? They were doing great adaptations, even to the extent of finishing and filling in the spaces of the original source material…. they were even presenting the stories in a chronicle order of Conan’s exploits. They showed a lot of effort put in them.

I don’t believe Queen of the Black Coast has been adapted yet. I just hope they won’t be rebooting the whole series (can you reboot adaptations?).
