BIRDS OF PREY to Return to Comics

On new comics day, DC Comics delivered some news about a new comic coming to stands soon, the return of a fan favorite title, Birds of Prey, with popular writer Gail Simone and Ed Benes on art duties.  This is a return to the title for both Simone and Benes, who worked together on the original series back in the day.

DC also provided an image of the team which can be seen below, featuring Black Canary, Oracle, Huntress, Lady Blackhawk and two shadowy figures in the background – what looks like a woman swinging in (Batwoman?) and what looks like…a man, despite the billing of an all-female team.  Who do you think they are?  How cool would it be if the man was Guy Gardner teamed up with all those women?

If Birds of Prey is your thing, then you'll want to check out the in-depth interview with Gail Simone over on Comics Alliance.

  1. 5 bucks say that one of them shadows is Manhunter.

  2. Awesome!!!

  3. Do any of them normally drive a car with a modified batsymbol on it?  Does the red bat symbol suggest Batwoman?

  4. I’m excited about this for the possibility of Ivory Madison one-shots.

  5. I don’t think there are enough words to express how excited I am for this. (I am not going to worry about Batgirl. I am not going to worry about Batgirl.)

Maybe this will get me League of Batgirls!

  6. Wow. Benes? Really?

  7. I think the shadow that is flying looks an awful like like Dove, not Batwoman.

  8. I say the guy (if it is) is John Forsythe or Bill Murray!

  9. @OttoBot  well he was on the original. i don’t see what the problem is

  10. Also, is the huntress packing a little something extra these days?

"Your gun is digging into my hip."

  11. Awesome.

@BizDaddy That’s the current Batmobile over in Batman & Robin.

  12. @muddi900 – considering one of them is caped and the other is built like Darkseid, I doubt it’s Manhunter. Unless she’s getting a costume change. But don’t her abilities completely rely on her costume?

  13. Wow. With Ed Benes drawing this, it may break the record for most gratuitous ass shots per issue. Not that I’m complaining.

  14. The shadow is probably Batgirl.

  15. Is Good News Announcement Week going to be an annual event?

  16. The smaller figure looks like Dove

  17. @Nate – It really looks like Dove, I hadn’t thought of her. Good one!

The return of the Birds sounds like a good decision. Looking forward to it!

  18. The faces of all 4 women are drawn exactly alike.  What are they, identical quadruplets???  Lazy.

  19. I love that the GCPD still uses zepplins for some reason

  20. Really excited for this!

  21. I really want to be excited about this, but I can’t. Ed’s art is just too T&A. I wish they took the art direction from Brubaker’s Catwoman run (1-37). In particular, Cooke, Cameron Stewart and Javier Pulido created a style that showed plenty of grace and beauty. I can’t help but think that this decision is so "Image 90s." I guess I’m not part of the audience they want to include in this. This doen’t even address the fact that my daughter (almost 10) won’t be shown this book, even though these are some of her favorite characters.

  22. Out of all the huge comic news stories that brok over the weekend, this is the one that has got me the most excited. I just dove into Simone’s run over the summer, and its become one of my favorite series. That series made Huntress one of my favorite female characters, and featured some really great art by Ed Benes in a good chunk of the series. Yeah, he makes the girls look actractive, but whats wrong with that?? Its nowhere near Budd Root’s style when he draws Cavewoman, so I dont know what people are complaining about.

  23. "What’s wrong with that?"

The world’s most airtight argument for anything…

  24. I just can’t take costumed adventurers serious when they dressed and are posed like that.

    *shrugs*

Edit: Okay, this is almost fun finding examples of ridiculous Benes T&A. A lot of Benes’ heroines get caught unawares and are turning around suddenly to react to…something. Maybe the camera. This, for example, made me laugh.

I dunno. It’s silly to me, espcially for a medium that’s been begging to be taken seriously for the past thirty plus years, but maybe I’m just crazy.

  25. Sounds good. DC is bringing a lot of old series back…..and making everyone happy

(whispers) Maybe the opposing company could learn a thing or two…

  26. So are they rebooting back to #1?

  27. I almost read that as "reboobing" back to #1.

  28. My money is on Batgirl. I wonder what happened to Misfit.

What I really want to know is who is the Darkseidish shadow.

  29. @Ottobot:

That’s his pinup art, which is supposed to be provocative like that and doesnt reflect all his interior work, so using those as a example of why he’s a bad artist is unfair. Its not like every issue of BoP was a collection of pinup art, he does great interiors.

  30. I don’t know if that’s Dove, though.  I can see how you would think that, but the cape is a little to bat-like to me. Granted, the other, larger figure could be the old Hawk and the new Dove.  Both are birds, no?

She’s quirky, but I’d love for Misfit to return. I’m not sure how that’d happen, but I’d like to see her somewhere in the DCU.

  31. I would think Batgirl as well, seeing as she’s working closely with Oracle.  We’ll just have to see.

  32. Ugh, when the hell are they going to redo Huntress’s outfit.  That’s one of the most 90’s costumes I’ve ever seen, and as far as I know it’s from 2003.

  33. Love Gail. But I still can’t figure out how Benes still gets work. His art is sooooooo dated and just not very good.

  34. I’m with Slockhart.

  35. Simone’s run on Birds ended before I started reading DC, so I’m not too acquainted with this series.  But I love these characters, and I love the fan enthusiasm for it. so I’m very pleased to hear this!  I hope DC is thinking the market can support this book, and Batgirl, and Batwoman.

  36. since DC is putting Gail Simone back on Birds of Prey, can they put Greg Rucka back on Wonder Woman? please?

  37. I’ll definitely give this a shot. Could be a very fun book.
