‘Arrow’ – S01E08 – “Vendetta”

I don’t know that it’s a good idea to give your girlfriend a crossbow.

Here’s how “Vendetta” is described:

As Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Helena (guest star Jessica DeGouw) grow closer, Oliver trains her to be his ally, complete with showing her how to use a crossbow. Diggle (David Ramsey) disapproves of Oliver sharing his secret with Helena as he’s not sure she can be trusted, but Oliver refuses to listen to his concerns. Helena’s quest for revenge proves to be too strong for Oliver to handle after she kills the head of the Triad and all hell breaks loose.

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

  1. Although I enjoy the fact that Ollie does kill in this show, this episode highlighted some huge logic holes in his morality every time he talked about killing/revenge with Helena.

I thought that was unusually bad writing for this surprisingly good show.

    • Dont you know you can only kill people with non-speaking roles and those whose faces are covered. like with gas masks or something. Classic faulty comic book logic.

    • I’m enjoying the show a lot and this didn’t kill it for me, but you are absolutely right. I’m not super familiar with Green Arrow in comic form. Does he kill people in the comics?

    • @Automator: In the Mike Grell years, which is clearly an influence on the show, he did.

    • It didn’t bother me. Ollie seems to have come to the point that it has to be “kill or be killed.” He will if he has to, but he’s not slaughtering people like Huntress was. If some triad hitman with a machine gun is about to blast you, I think it’s acceptable to shoot to kill.

  2. The first 5 minutes was crazy klunky. They’ve had sex, then they go fight bad guys in costume, argue, apparently stop arguing, remove their costumes to go out for diner food for a minute, and then argue and leave each other. It felt like they’d filmed random scenes and just spliced them together.

  3. This may have been one of the worst episodes so far, but I still enjoyed it. Interesting that this conclusion (following a very good set-up written by Geoff Johns) was handled so clumsily. Anyway, I’m still on board.

  4. “Any associate of Oliver’s…”
“Is absolutely nothing to you. Ma’am.”

    I love Diggle.

    • Diggle in Probably my favorite character at this point. What a great line. I hope they focus on him just a little more heavily as the series progresses.
I also can’t wait to see more of Oliver’s mysterious island trainer.

    • I love Diggle as well, but I have a feeling since he’s a sidekick of color that he will die at some point. 🙁

  5. I am really liking this show I know its a little rough here and there but a first season is. I can’t wait for more Deathstroke.

  6. This was my least favorite episode so far. It seems to be getting a little more cheesy, but I’m still enjoying it overall.

What does Diggle do besides randomly show up at the hideout or diner? 😉 I wish they’d work him more into the action scenes. Also, every time Ollie works out on that crazy pull-up rack I feel less and less like a man. Sweet Jebus…

  7. This and the Mindy Project are the only new shows this fall I stuck with.

  8. This episode was an absolute blast, the best of the season in my book.

I’m curious if Ollie’s ever going to get his hands on the book Walter found. Ollie did use some pages to keep a fire going when on the island, so there are names he’s missing. I’d like it if Felicity joins Ollie’s circle at some point in the future. They better not kill her off. And Diggle is definitely hooking up with his sister-in-law and he’s going to feel damn guilty about it.

  9. Despite my initial misgivings, Arrow has turned out to be a pretty solid t.v. show. I’m liking everyone’s place in the story and glad to see something being done with Tommy instead of being the sarcastic, jerky buddy whose got no purpose other than unfunny one-liners. My guess is he will turn against Oliver in the second half on the season.

It’s cool how many comic book characters are being introduced and I’m still holding out hope for an appearance from Shado.

  10. I love the show, I just wish that it was more DC Comics than Soap Opera. Oliver fights the villain of the week and they will have a guest star like Deathstroke, Deadshot, China White and Huntress. I wish they did more of that.

Most of the other characters just “sit there” with no purpose except to talk back to Oliver. I too am glad that they are developing Merlyn. I wish they did that for Thea (Speedy), Laurel (Black Canary) and John Diggle.
