‘Arrow’ – S01E03 – “Lone Gunman”

The other DC characters are coming in fast and furious! Meanwhile, the numbers held! Total viewers only fell 16% to 3.5 million which is a very strong second week showing and makes Arrow one of the few “breakout” new hows of the season. So of course The CW picked up the show for a full season.

Here’s how “Lone Gunman” is described:

Oliver (Stephen Amell) is surprised when someone shoots and kills one of his targets. As his plan is to bring people to justice vs. outright killing them, Oliver doesn’t appreciate the help and searches for the gunman. He soon learns that the man, Deadshot (guest star Michael Rowe), is taking out businessmen who are scheduled to bid at an auction on an energy company and Walter (Colin Salmon) is one of the bidders. Realizing he can’t protect his family and stop Deadshot at the same time, Oliver enlists Detective Lance’s (Paul Blackthorne) help, but his plan has dire consequences. Meanwhile, Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Tommy (Colin Donnell) get caught in an awkward situation with Oliver.

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

Comments

  1. my puppy wont stop pooping in the house 🙁

  2. I enjoyed the show, despite the ending I really hope Deadshot is able to make more appearances on the show, probally the best episode so far:)

  3. I’m kind of surprised by how much I’m enjoying this show…..this was the best episode yet I think.

  4. Mustache, lit cigarette and a very calm cool. This is Floyd Lawton. Once again the CW dropped the ball on one of my very favorite characters. But I won’t harp on the negative. I liked this episode. Once again Diggle is proving to be the show’s strongest character. His comments to Ollie about the white knight riding in to save the poor souls of the Glades sounded like something straight out of a Denny O’Neil script. First and foremost GA is a hero of the people and that’s one thing this show is nailing.

  5. There are three new action genre series I’ve tried out this season and so far this is one is the best at what it’s supposed to do. The other two are Revolution & Last Resort. I couldn’t watch past the 1st episode of Revolution the writing and acting were so poor. Last Resort’s first episode kicked ass, but it hasn’t been able to maintain that episode’s high budget or suspense. Arrow has been the only one to do what it does well and keep dribbling out the long story in tantalizing doses. They got this show right.

  6. Two of my biggest geekouts tonight — 1st was the passing mention of Markovia. 2nd was Laurel kicking some ass with some SERIOUS Black Canary type moves. This show gets better and better every week.

  7. This show does get better week to week and this was the best show to date……Now my gripes…..I didnt like that they killed off Deadshot…and his eyepiece looked ridiculous….once again hollywood why are you so reluctant to look more like the comics?!? Something more resembling his costume would have been appreciated!…..Also Green Arrow seems a little to much like Batman to me….and this episode gave him a “Jim Gordon” so to speak……but a good show with a lot of potential to be sure…..Heres hoping!

  8. – Our first glimpse of Dinah’s possible future as Black Canary! (Or something similar.)

    – That cliff-hanger! (The show’s good at that so far.)

    – Deadshot’s probably dead. (But it could go either way.)

    • I don’t think he is dead, i could see them bringing him back with a mechanical eye instead of the eyepiece. But then again, how many right eye-less villains can there be in one show.

    • They need to stop killing off all the bad guys. That’s my only beef with the show. they are gonna run out of villains and won’t be able to bring any back next season.

Plus I want a Suicide Squad sent to take out Arrow!

    • I loved watching Dinah (Laurel) kicking some ass. He needs to start training Speedy, I think they are staying close to the comics character with her. I also wonder if the bodyguard becomes Bronze Tiger possibly? He has some skills from last weeks episode.

    • @Conor I think my biggest surprise in this show so far is how great the cliffhangers are every week. Reminds me of the comics when I was a kid.

    • I hope that Deadshot just loses an eye, which makes him seek revenge against Ollie in the future.

  9. I have no voices for the first 17 minutes of the show, what do I do?

  10. I thought it was funny that Deadshot was using a sight on his rifle. I always kind of assumed that’s what the eyepiece was for. Or am I the only one who found that odd?

    • I think the eyepiece is for his wrist gun. At least I always thought it was. But you’d think he could use it for either one, right?

  11. The IT lady, Felicity Smoak, is actually a member of Firestorm’s old supporting cast. Someone involved with this show apparently has read a comic book or two in their life.

  12. I love the other little touches of DC mythology spread throughout. The mention of Markovia. The number on the door: 52.

  13. Has there ever been any reference to the asian guy on the island in the comics? Is he supposed to be the man that trained deathstroke back in the judd winick run?

    • I wonder that myself; I hope that mystery guy who shot and healed Oliver is NOT Deathstroke the Terminator. I’m guessing that they will make him some type of Yoda who trained Oliver?

    • Indigo it’s not deathstroke the mask is on that spike on the island god me and Victor (friend of mine) LOVE this show it’s the only thing on CW worth the fucking time

  14. I enjoy all the comic nuggets thrown in, and it helps that you folks notice them for me. Keep it up and thanks. 🙂
My favorite moment was Laural Lance kicking a little ass. I cant wait for her to go all in. I also enjoyed the dynamics with the I.T. babe. Hope to see more with her.

  15. I just discovered that actress Katie Cassidy who plays Laural is pop icon David Cassidy’s daughter, pretty cool.

  16. The other comic geek stuff I found:

    – The name Yasemin Soze was in the book. She was a mob boss and opponent of Bird of Prey who joined the Suicide Squad and was killed by Deadshot.

    – The name Andy Haskell waws tattooed on Lawton. Haskell was a lawyer in Deadshot Beginnings Issue 1.

    – Diggle took Ollie and Tommy to Big Belly Burger, a fast food chain in the DCU.

    I’m sure there are more…

  17. Deadshot is not dead. Last thing I remember was him just lying there with a arrow in the eyepiece, it not like there was a scene of EMTs carrying him on a stretcher with a sheet over him and burying him… sooo… not dead.

Loved that Dinah Laurel showed she can kick ass… along with Oliver’s inner monologue about not being able to do it all alone… plus the ending…. yeah, this show is hitting the right chords.

The only really super-minor nitpicks I would have are:
    – Deadshot should have had more lines… the whole time I’m thinking this must be some b or c list actor just paid to run around with an eyepiece… once he starts talking, he seems to have character. But up until that point, was just some dude.
    – Did not like the laser sight, it was just a cliche, cheap, lazy plot device. The guy has got the eyepiece, plus a scope… and he’s going to give himself away with a stupid red laser pointer? Silly, that could have been better. Makes ‘one of the world’s best assassins’ look like a chump.

  18. Did anyone catch the name “Andrew Diggle” tattooed on Deadshot’s chest? Not only is it a nice shout out to Andy Diggle, but when John Diggle was talking to his sister-in-law about how his brother was murdered, I thought “oh shit, Deadshot’s killed his brother!”

    • I saw Andrew Diggle on there, but I did not put it together with it being John Diggle’s brother. Good catch!

Surely someone on the interwebs is keeping a running list of these references…

  19. I really enjoyed that Big Belly Burger is now a restaurant in this show. That was always one of my favorite background bits in the 1990s Superman books.
