An Early Look at Francesco Francavilla’s Layouts for Detective Comics

There's a perfect storm brewing over Gotham City, and we couldn't be more excited for it to touch down. November 24th sees the start of Scott Snyder's run on Detective Comics and the new story line "The Black Mirror." The bulk of that 40-page issue will be drawn by Jock, but there's a Maraschino cherry on top: a Commissioner Gordon co-feature drawn by rising star Francesco Francavilla.

To pull back the cowl a little, DC Comics has released six pages of Francavilla's layout, showcasing what the artist sees as the most important step in his creative process. Here we get to see the rough pencils which will ultimately serve as blueprint for Francavilla's finished pages. The mood and atmosphere are already evident with the balance of light and dark, and even minus the words, there's a great sense of tension and suspense.

Looks like we've got a yarn on our hands, folks.

Detective Comics #871, written by Scott Snyder and featuring art from Jock and Francesco Francavilla, is out November 24th.

  18. wow. If those are preliminary layouts, then i understand why it takes so long to produce one comic on schedule.

  19. Wow those look amazing! I wouldn’t mind if this back up were actually in black and white. I think it would be more grity or noir.

  20. I feel like ‘Tec Comics is getting a back seat right now to Batman and Batman and Robin….It’s a shame because the storyline and artwork have been fantastic as of late………..
