After a second strong week in the ratings for The Walking Dead, AMC has officially given the green light for a 13 episode second season of the hit show.
(Yes, there was some thought that a second season was already ordered after comments by executive produce Frank Darabont, but AMC quickly denied that. I'm guessing they were expecting to order a second season but were headging their bets in case the show bombed.)
What's more? Ratings for the second episode were almost as strong as the first. As I was watching the second episode I was thinking about the ratings and I thought that even if the ratings dipped 50% it would still be one of the top shows on AMC. The ratings did not dip that far.
Ratings for The Walking Dead – Episode 2
- 10pm airing – 4.7 million viewers
- Adults 18-49 – 3.3 million viewers
- Adults 25-54 – 2.8 million viewers
- Men 18-49 – 2.1 million viewers
Ratings for The Walking Dead – Episode 1
- 10pm airing – 5.3 million total viewers
- Adults 18-49 – 3.6 million viewers
- Adults 25-54 – 3.1 million viewers
- Men 18-49 – 2.0 million viewers

@SirCox: It’s not unusual for AMC. BREAKING BAD only had 8 in its first season.

The first season’s already 1/3 over, so I’m glad to see that a full cable season is on deck for this show. Nice to see that the ratings lost very little for the second ep. I really want to get my hands on the DVD set when it comes out.

Yes, Breaking Bad’s first season was meant to be 13 episodes. Standard AMC length.
Rubicon, AMC’s last original series, was a bit of a ratings flop. To the point where people aren’t sure if it is going to return for a second season. AMC ordered a full season for it. So I’m guessing it’s struggles made them think twice regarding TWD.
As for the week 2 ratings. That’s great! I was expecting a bigger drop off than that. Very promising to see not much at all. Almost all tv series suffer a decent amount of drop off from their premiere episodes. Hopefully this means it won’t be a Halloween-induced flash in the pan.
Well hopefully the quality of the show skyrockets back to the level of the first episode from here on out.
It’s also impressive that the viewings from later timeslots have increased in a two week span.

Wow. Ratings actually increased (though probably not statistically significantly) in the target demographic. That’s strong. I’m glad it’s getting a second season.
GREAT! I wonder how they will release the DVD? One season of six episodes or maybe the first two season together at 19 episodes.
Amazon is already taking pre-orders for the first season, so I’m guessing that it’ll be a 6 episode set.
That 11% drop is unheard of for a second episode after a hyped-up premiere. Somewhere right now, Robert Kirkman is getting a *******.
This is some amazing news, can’t wait to get it released on DVD or Bly-ray over here in NZ, I doubt we will ever be allowed to air to, our Broadcasting companies and Government are WAY! too P.C.

Finally caught up with this in the UK last night – Oh. My. Word was this good. The cross-cut scene between the bike-zombie and Morgan’s sniping was one of the best sequences I’ve seen on television this year. Fantastic news!

Just out of curiosity, who issued these ratings, AMC/FIC? I’m not too familiar with cable ratings, but broadcast networks always seem to spin numbers so that even their worst shows are winning at some odd demo.
Those are indeed some very impressive numbers. I wonder how many TV households get AMC? That might make these number even more impressive.
