January 10, 2012 1:43 pm My favorite was when Risk (from the Atom's Teen Titans), who had previously had an arm ripped off by Superboy-Prime, attacks him during the Sinestro Corps War and says "All I need is one!" Then Prime rips his other arm off.
August 24, 2011 8:53 pm I expect the JSA to be back within a couple of years. They don't have much mainstream recognition, but as soon as someone does become a DC fan and learns about the characters, their interest is piqued. When The Flash was revived, the early fans, led by Roy Thomas and Jerry Bails, let DC know that they wanted to see the old favorites. And there is always a writer to fan that flame. After the JSA was fully retired for the first time in 1986, fan interest remained high and Neil Gaiman made several references to the old team in Sandman, so they brought the team back in 1991. After the team was broken up by Zero Hour, James Robinson's Starman and Mark Waid's continued use of Jay in the Flash kept interest alive until the 1999 revival. So I am sure there's a writer who will adopt the team in the new world and keep interest going until they come back. With titles like Weird Western Tales and My Greatest Adventure returning, maybe we'll see a new All-Star Comics #1 to tell the story of the JSA's WWII adventures.
February 21, 2011 3:39 pm Neat! I one made a family starting with Hank Pym, which became more of a spider-web, creating Ultron, who made the Vision, who had Wonder Man's brain waves and married Scarlet Witch, brother of Quicksilver, who married Crystal, who once dated Johnny Storm, etc.
January 3, 2011 9:55 am Having worked in he MMO field, I would say that DCUO has an uphill battle. It went into development in 2005, when the traditional subscription MMO outlook looked extremely bright after the success of WoW. However, MMOs live by the function of churn. In most cases, more than half of subscribers drop off after the free month. However, recently the numbers have been less promising. Star Trek Online, Warhammer Online and Age of Conan all sold between 750K and a million boxes, but their subscriptions all dropped to 10-20 percent of that within the first year. None of these were particularly bad games, but clearly the value proposition didn't match the subscription fee for most players.

The $199 lifetime subscription is interesting because the lifespan for the average MMO player is under 10 months. The $199 price point squeezes some extra dollars out of a percentage of them, while also increasing their likelihood to buy future expansions and keeping them a part of the potential buying pool for virtual goods.

I'd predict that DCUO will sell a million copies in two months and be at around 300K subscribers inside of six months, with fifty thousand of them having purchased the lifeime package. If 300K matches the expectations of Sony/DC management, there will be an expansion within a year at $40 (which 80 percent of subscribers typically purchase. Expansions also bring in a small shot of new subscribers).

Not to make this a competition, but I'd actually expect Marvel Super Hero Squad Online to do a bit better (and I say that as a DC fan). It is a more casual, all ages game. While all ages and casual might not be good things in the comics market, they are excellent in games. I expect MSSO to cost less to develop and launch at a lower price and subscription point, buoyed by virtual goods. In business terms, it will resemble Farmville more than it does WoW.
