This book continues to be a pure delight to read.  Those that are looking for a title to fill the Power Girl void may want to give this title a shake.  It’s been developing Zatanna as a great character, and each issue continues to add to her mythos.  Each issue is also a lot of fun, and it never gets too heavy handed.  The creators find a nice balance between the light hearted banter and the great superheroic mystical action you’d expect.  This issue finds Dini taking a breather, but the wonderful Matthew Sturges, who has plenty of experience writing mystical characters, does a nice job continuing the tone of the series.  This issue’s villain is interesting, and I have to tip my hat to Sturges for coming up with so many phrases that help Zatanna overcome her obstacles.  The story is self contained, but still continues the saga of Zatanna’s overall story.  Stephen Roux returns to art duties, and this book is fantastic looking.   He does a great job illustrating the action and all of the magic that Zatanna does.  I only wish that they would color him on his interiors as they do for his covers, which often have richer tones and more texture to them.  His art, while good looking, felt a little flat with the coloring choices.  His storytelling was solid, and I never once felt lost.  This is a great one-and-done issue for anyone who’s interested in the series.  Give it a try if you’re at all curious.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. I like your comments on the coloring, I had the same feeling.  I hadn’t even noticed that it wasn’t Dini this issue, so you’re right, Sturges deserves lots of props, it fit in seamlessly with how the book has read since issue #1.
