I have pretty much always been a DC guy – but there was a stretch of time where I followed the X-Men closely.

The last X-Men comic I read was 15 years ago. I can’t remember the issue number but I do remember it had something to do with Professor Xavier becoming Onslaught. During my Marvel days I sought out and read every X-Men comic starting with Claremont’s Giant Sized classic that re-ignited those uncanny mutants and led to that book dominating comics in the 80’s. Claremont’s run in that decade should be mandatory reading for any comic book fan. Pretty much all roads lead to there.

So, even though it’s been 15 years since I picked up an X-Men book, I was curious to read this “Final Issue” and see how the team of Gillen/Land handled the end of an era.

I still had the bad taste of how DC dropped the ball at ending their own books before the re-boot. Superman and Action Comics, two of the longest running series ever, went out with a whimper.

Well, Uncanny X-Men #544 is how you properly end a long running, and much cherished comic. The right amount of nostalgia and the future is dealt here by writer Kieron Gillen. I’m sure he knew some older readers would pop their heads in the danger room once again to see their old friends off, and I felt my brief visit was worth the time.

Thanks Kieron for a lovely story. I know Scott, Logan, Bobby, Hank, I’m sure at some point Jean, and the rest of the gang are in good hands.
