In the last issue of Uncanny X-Men, Cyclops said of his extinction team “A mission. We need a mission. We need a big one.” And, lo, did Gillen pull UNIT from his brief SWORD run.

As a long time X-reader, I really want to like every issue I pick up. It’s why I keep reading even when I haven’t enjoyed an author or artist’s run. It’s why I’ve read every Milligan scripted issue and everything Greg Land has traced.

I am not enjoying this run. From Gillen’s plot to Pacheco’s oddly proportioned pencils (I find his versions of Emma Frost and Namor as offputting as the “horse faced Beast from SWORD), nothing about this title appeals to me. It’s nice to have an X-book that doesn’t seem to be affected by AvX (I’m guessing it takes place before?) but this book doesn’t appear to either have significance outside the title nor be fun enough that I don’t care about its significance.

  1. As much as I wish it weren’t so, I’ve been very lukewarm on Uncanny since the relaunch. It’s never been a bad comic (even with Greg Land), and I like the idea of the Extinction Team, but the execution just hasn’t excited me like other X-books have (Wolverine and The X-Men, and even X-Men Legacy). I don’t think Gillen is to blame, since he’s had to fit in and around AVX for most of his run. I’m sticking with it through AVX with the hopes that there’s something about the post-AVX status quo that really intrigues me.

  2. “I don’t think Gillen is to blame, since he’s had to fit in and around AVX for most of his run.”

??? No he hasn’t. Gillen’s had quite a few storyarcs to himself now — even Schism didn’t REALLY effect Uncanny for very long — and yet he’s consistently been underwhelming. I can’t believe this is the same writer who did such great indie work.

And, please, someone tell Pacheco to go back to his old style already.

  3. @Flapjaxx: I agree on Pacheco abandoning this style. I don’t understand who his current style is supposed to appeal to.

@KenOchalek: The thing is, he’s not writing about or aound AvX at all. It’s as though AvX isn’t happening in this universe. This seems almost like a What If? story.

    • I may not have put it clearly but what I meant is that AVX has been on the schedule and in the works ever since Uncanny relaunched (and probably before that).

So even though AVX is only now coming out, I feel like Gillen hasn’t had a tremendous amount of free reign on the book.

Last summer’s Breakworld arc is definitely his, but then he had to tie into Fear Itself (and did a very good job actually) and then he had to wrap up the series for Schism. Since Schism, he’s basically had to establish the team so the AVX writers can run with them for the next 6 months.

Again, I don’t think he’s doing a bad job (especially these last two issues), but I think he hasn’t truly had the opportunity to impose his own vision on the characters. I’m excited for AVX and like all those creators, so I’m not complaining, but I really hope Gillen gets the opportunity to run with the Uncanny once AVX is over.
