The art on this book continues to bug me.  It’s technically great (I gave it a 4, even though I hate it).  But, Gwen Stacy is not a blonde Asian girl, and people’s hair is generally not so translucent that you can see their faces through it.  I mean, mine is, but that’s because I’m going bald.  I don’t think Aunt May, Mary Jane or Peter are currently having that issue.  I really hope Bendis finds another artist, or else has the current artist de-Mangaise the art for the next run.  It’s really distracting me from a fantastic Spider-Man story.

This is Grade A High School Peter Parker storytelling.  Personal drama, high powered villain, problem with the Spider Suit, and a last page reveal.  And, is that supposed to be The Ultimate Hood on the cover?  (No, really, tell me.  I really don’t know.)

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

Comments

  1. The art is also bugging me in the biggest way.  I was walking along last night after reading this issue, and I was genuinely pondering dropping the book and just reading in trades for a while until the art changes, because I’m not enjoying the book anymore the way I always did till now.

  2. I love Lafuente’s art. I think it’s a step up from Bagley but not quite as good as Immonen. Lafuente is really good at emotion and scale and his action sequences are dynamic.

  3. I love Lafuente’s art also – granted I thought Immonen’s was perfect and I hadn’t read the whole line (so I wasn’t stuck with Bagley2.
