When I reviewed the first issue of this book, I focused on how I’d never noticed Paul Gulacy’s name before.  How I felt his art occasionally enhanced the story, never detracted from it, but mainly took a back seat to Palmiotti and Gray’s writing.

That changed with this issue.

Now that we are fully ensconced in Nazi-era Germany, I’m not as interested as I was when they were time traveling.  I love Palmiotti’s grasp of dialog, but something about this issue wasn’t sitting right with me, so I went back and tried to get the story entirely from the art.  And it worked.  And I loved it.

I think the problem I have with the dialog is that it can’t decide whether the characters from the future are or aren’t successful at talking like they’re from the 40s.  It’s probably deliberate on Palmiotti’s part, but it just pulled me out of the story.  The actual plot of the story is still great, and I am curious how they’re going to wrap this up.  But the star of this issue for me was Paul Gulacy.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I found the dialogue a little clunky at times as well. I think they don’t 100% have a handle on these characters. I as a reader don’t either. The story itself is kicking some amazing ass, though. I loved the silver pen.
