The first TMNT work with Eastman on the book from cover to beautiful cover since the ‘city at war’ story-line so long ago. While this story takes place in current continuity, you can read it as a stand alone. The story is a little slow to get going, but once it does, it’s a brawl not to be missed with French ninjas, the foot, the turtles, and detectives Frank Corbin and Richard Millar (see what they did there?). Solid all around, and a good romp, and in so many ways a throwback comics for all the right reasons.

However if you don’t don’t already have fond memories of Eastman’s art, this issue wouldn’t impress as well because whereas the art is good, there are none of his breathtaking signature layouts in this book. Also with the price point at 8.99, not the solicited 7.99, it would be hard for anyone but the diehard fan to justify this purchase, as unlike the current run this is a black and white book.

So if you’re on the fence ditch a beer or a coffee and pick up this one man tour de force. If you’re looking to get into the Turtles, go pick up the first trade of the new series as it will be a better read, and in full color.
