You know those episodes of Dr. Who where the clever writing goes from endearing to “Oh, please, make it stop.”?  Yea, that’s Gillen’s writing for me.  He is the Russel T. Davies to Joss Whedon’s Steven Moffat.  He has sound ideas, and a decent sense of tension, but his constantly winking dialog is really tiring.

And, yes, Beast still looks awful.

  1. This is such a fun book. I really don’t understand your "review". I love the winking dialogue, I found it very Marvel way, and what I really don’t understand is your "make it stop" comment. What do you found so awful about the writing?

Cause all the storytelling, plot threads and beats are fucking tight. All the concepts are very cool and relevant to the Marvel mythos. Unit is a very cool new character and i think that Gillen gets all the different characters voices. Personally, i really love how he writes Beast. And fuck, we’re following like a million stories taking place on the same day and everything is clear as day. That is good writing and good art in my humble opinion.

  2. Well, rockingeek, it’s all about opinion.  Ours appear to differ.  I don’t enjoy the winking dailog here.   Some writers manage to create humorous nudges that I enjoy.  I don’t enjoy Gillen’s method.  It’s way more groan than grin for me

So I think it’s less that you don’t understand my review, and more that you disagree with it.   Which is perfectly fine.

For me, I don’t care how tight a storyline is, if I’m not enjoying the panel to panel writing.  And I’m not enjoying it in this title.  I don’t think the issues should be applauded merely for the concepts being relevant.  A lot of worse writers than Gillen create relevant stories.  That doesn’t mean I’m going to enjoy them.

  3. I agree with you that its all about opinion. I really love this book, it speaks to me.

  4. Comparisons to RTD make baby jesus cry. 🙁
