Runaways is a book that teens should relate too. Being almost 18, I know that on some levels I could relate with the themes of volume 1. This latest issue, however, really hit home for me in a way that I wasn't expecting. I'll get to that in a moment.
The plot is simple enough. The Majesdanes have tracked Karolina Dean to Earth in order to kill her as revenge for her parents causing the destruction of their home world. Nico scatters all but one of them to different points around the world, and the remaining person is held for questioning. Their planet was destroyed because Mr. and Ms. Dean betrayed their people, informing the Skrulls of the planet's coordinates.
Karolina, due to the anger between to two races, thought that her marriage to a Skrull (Xavin, who is apparently female in this issue) would perhaps ease the tension is some way. The Majesdanes, however, think of it as a perversion.
Not much really happens in the issue, but the character development and characterizations in general were brilliant, especially in the second-to-last page. This is where the issue got me, the moment where Xavin asks Karolina "Are we okay?" To which she responds "I don't know." The last panel is silent.
This hit home so well because I think we've all been at that point before. Something happens between you and someone you care for, and the way you see them changes. Suddenly you don't know if everything will be alright, or even somewhat like the way it was. Anyone who has ever cared for someone can relate to that, and feel what is happening in this story, and that's what has made it as good as it is. I've never read anything else by Terry Moore, but he now has my respect.
