This issue really saddened me.  I’ve loved a majority of the first fifteen issues of this series, and was really intrigued by Nicieza’s Hit List storyline.  But this issue felt like two or three well-paced issues crammed into one so Red Robin can sync up with The Return Of Bruce Wayne.  A series that I’m in no way excited for.

I will add this to Batman, Batman and Robin, and Detective as Batbooks that I’ve dropped this year.  Maybe after some time away, I can come back and find The Return Of Bruce Wayne story interesting, but after RIP and Bruce Wayne’s limp time traveling journey, I just can’t get excited about any of the Batbooks.  It’s unfortunate that they feel the need to drag down all the side books, too.  (And, yes, Froggulper, I’m aware that Drake has been part of the search for Wayne since issue one of Red Robin, but they were starting to establish a side arc that intrigued me much more than the time traveling, and I’m sad that they’re rushing out of it so quickly.)

  1. I think RR has been the most consistently well-done Batbook of those mentioned. This issue must REALLY suck if you think it reached the point of being droppable. I hope you are wrong!

  2. @HailScott: It didn’t suck.  It’s just veering into a storyline that I’m not enjoying.

The writing was ok, just very heavy on the narration boxes, and, as I said the pacing seemed forced, but not awful.  Were this an average run of a superhero comic, I wouldn’t have been as dissapointed in the quality of this issue, but I think the first couple of issues of Nicieza’s arc were excellent, so I was sad to see this not be excellent, but just ok.

  3. Just read it. You are spot on with all of your critiques, but I enjoyed it anyhow. I also tried Batgirl (for the third time), and just can’t get into it. I loved the art, but the writing is a little too campy for my style.
