He is made to work for the king of hell which is an old annoying guy that sends him to missions he doesn't really want to take which include collecting souls or retrieving souls that escaped hell, and they usually appear as giant monsters and just when you think there is going to be a giant fight scene - he wins pretty quickly - after all, he IS a great warrior.
The manga is in black and white in the printing sense - printing sense meaning it doesn't seem to me to be intended to a black and white format, but it works in a black and white format (the collection from TokyoPop - I bought the first volume in a Hebrew printing and it wasn't very good. Something intended to a black and white format is Box Office Poison for example).
In both editions the background noises aren't translated since it is hard to do - they are incorporated into the drawing and it would be tough translating it in a way that won't ruin the drawing, but it seems to have more importance than the US equivalent where you see someone knocking and it says "knock knock knock".
That's basically it but I'm not interested in a high brow concept - just some SnG. At the third volume or the second one he gets together with other people and it seems that the plot of the next few volumes will be explaining more about him and why he has so much work nowadays (this collection does add some info on him). It might seem to be building towards something but don't get your hopes up. I haven't read the fourth volume so I don't know but when there is a build up in the first volume of a fight between this guy and some giant monster that is racking havoc on innocent people, and at the end it just takes him a few seconds to beat it, It's not wise to get your hopes up.
But that is what I like about this series - I didn't want Dragon Ball Z and hopefully it won't turn to that.
It's a violent and humorous series - it is very violent but it's in a looney tunes style where people can get hit hard and survive, but there is a page at the end of the collection that tells me it's going to get more graphic.
The art style is somewhat real looking but can get cartoon like at times - like a 2D drawing.
I will ruin a part of the collection to you to demonstrate the weird humor in this book and why I like it so much:
In the second or third part of the collection (meaning the second or third volume) a kid tries to rob the main character (which is a very proficient warrior) and fails and the two start to talk, and the kid starts crying about how he's a coward and the main character gives him a speech that explains that he's not a coward and that being afraid isn't bad, and they start to walk together.
After a few pages the kid asks the main character if the wants to be his friend and the main character (which gave him a speech about how being afraid isn't bad) yells at him and tells him "why would I want to be a friend of a coward"? He after that asks him if he wants to accompany him to his destination and the kid agrees.
A few pages after that someone far away talks about the main character and he senses it and he thinks it's something bad and he asks the kid if he talked about him behind his back and the kid denies, but the main character doesn't believe him and kicks him and the kid flies to the sky and yells "I've been framed".
There is also a nice interaction between a spy that is sent to make sure Majeh (the main character) is doing his job since he's not very reliable, but he finds out about that, and beats the spy to a pulp at almost each encounter.
It's just fun...
