Inbetween seasons on the 90s sitcom Grace Under Fire, they replaced the actor who played Quentin.  Both actors were good, but it produced a completely different vibe.  It didn’t feel like Quentin looked the same, it felt like the original son had been kidnapped or killed and Brett Butler had replaced him with a new kid, but was just too lazy to give him another name.

Often, when an artist is switched out during the run of a comic, I feel this way.  I may enjoy both their work, but why does Cable look so skinny now, and when did Ultimate Gwen Stacy become Chinese?

Somehow, Jonah Hex is immune to this syndrome.  Maybe it’s the one-offedness.  Maybe it’s just that Palmiotti and Gray’s voice for this book is so strong that the art doesn’t matter.  Maybe this comic would be just as strong if Rob Liefeld made stick figures for it using only charcoal briquettes.  I don’t know.  But I do know that Palmiotti and Gray consistently team up with precisely the right artists for their stories, whethere it’s a name I’m familiar with or someone I’ve never heard of.

The differently colored backgrounds in the opening sequence of this book are phenomenal.  Incredibly simple.  A nine panel grid of people being shot.  But the choice of deep, solid colored backgrounds make the action jump out, and carry you right over to the title page.  From there on out the art is great without being noticably great.  Solid storytelling that doesn’t take away from the story.
