This week we get a dark horror story out of Jonah Hex. I love how this book goes in waves of some dark humor and then back to some seriously dark shit as we see this week. Palmiotti and Gray examine what it is like for a complete bastard to be a Doctor during the Civil War. Our "Sawbones" as he is called does all sorts of heinous things, from felaying his vicitms to practicing some hoodoo. He reminds me of a Victorian Era Hannibal Lecter, well minus the cannibalism.
The art on this book also goes in waves. Sometimes we get things that feel comicy, but really fit the book and then there are weeks we get something like what Beck puts on the table for this issue. This issue's artwork is gorgeous, the darkness of everything definitly fits the story well.
I'm also happy to see that we got a two parter. The shining light of this book is that anyone can pick it up at anytime because they usually do one shots. But one of the best stories from Jonah Hex, The Balad of Tulah Black is mulitple issues. Speaking of we get our return of Talulah in this issue. She finds our "Hero" half dead in a river. I thought this issue couldn't get any better and then I see the return of one of the best characters introduced since this book started, I about shit a brick.
I highly recommend people get this book like I do every month. If you go to get it next month, just don't forget to grab issue 40 as well.
I can't believe that this book is closing in on issue 50.
