You ever been to a comedy club and seen someone really bomb? At first—especially if you paid—it kind of pisses you off; but after awhile watching a guy have so many jokes drop to the floor that he’s tripping over them just ends up making you feel kind of awkward and maybe a little sad. Which, unfortunately, brings us to Mr. Roberson’s one shot attempt at writing Jack of Fables. Mr. Robeson tries to tell the tale of Jack’s experience encountering a group of talking monkeys in the jungles of Africa at the turn of the century. I could spend the rest of this review decrying Mr. Robeson’s anachronistic jokes and his failure to create a believable fictional space in which comedy can actually occur (he winks so hard at the audience while writing, I can only assume he needed some sort of eye-lid surgery post-script), but what would be the point really. It’s his first comic writing gig. He made an initial effort and fell short, which is fine. The editors took a risk by giving a new guy a shot, which I appreciate. Let’s just say this wasn’t good and leave it at that. The poor fellow’s suffered enough; I mean, his name’s on the thing. Let’s just give him a friendly round of applause as he leaves the stage, when we see the poor schmuck at the bar let’s make sure to buy him a drink and wish him good luck for next time.
