I give this comic “4 out 5 dudes shot in the head”!
“We have to go back in time to stop them!!!!” How many times have you heard that one? And just how many times has that line been said in a “good” story? Yeah, not that many. The main problem with that line is all the baggage that accompanies it – time travel paradoxes, why didn’t they just go back further to a easier time to “get the bad guy”?, so on and so on – stuff that makes your head hurt thinking about too much. Well I have good news for you, I didn’t get a headache reading Robert Kirkman’s and Rob Liefeld’s new comic The Infinite.
The Infinite is a group of… aliens? Super Soldiers? left over Liefeld characters that didn’t get used in X-Force? We are not quite sure at the start of the comic. What we are sure of is that there are only two freedom fighters left to take down this organization that has enslaved the world and given it, according to the Infinite’s leader Imperious, “peace”. Now why would anyone want to take down someone that has delivered peace? All I can say is remember in Revenge of The Sith when Emperor Palapine is spouting off about giving the galaxy peace? Yeah, not all crazy world dominating psychopaths tell the truth. So, from the get go know that the freedom fighters are our guys – Bowen and Case, the last of the mohicans – two against an army of guys with guns that I’m not sure if they shoot bullets or plasma bursts but make a sound effect like they do shoot bullets. I assume they are bullets because of the gun clips, but the barrels of the guns don’t quite match up to that theory. Ahh, but I’m getting sidetracked…. How can Bowen and Case hope to overthrow this huge evil empire? They have a plan. Steal the time travel machine that The Infinite used to travel back in time from our future and enslave us. With said time machine Bowen and Case can then travel back in time to when The Infinite first appears on the scene and take them down. Uh oh, I’m feeling a headache coming on. Better talk about the art.
Rob Liefeld. No other two words cause more of an emotional reaction in comic book readers. Why is this? Is it his art? Is it his cockiness? Is it his inability to meet a deadline? yes to all of the above. But hey, the dude was just kid when he became a super star. That shit goes to ones head. Over the years he as mellowed out and honestly seems to just want to make fun comics and do what he loves. His art is not the best. It reeks of amateur hour and self published comics by high schoolers. But somehow his enthusiasm for the art comes across on the page and you just have to smile at the fun of it all. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and neither should you going into this comic.
Kirkman’s been a roll here for awhile and I plan on sticking around to see where The Infinite goes. This first issue has set up a lot of potential paths for the comic to take, and knowing Kirkman, he’s gonna take the coolest path there is.
