I'm told this book is the result of a story concept contest, and the concept is a good one. The deserving Renée Tempête, Miss Maine, is rejected for the role of "Gallant Girl', an annually appointed member of the superhero team, the "Fellowship of Freedom".
The script by Kat Cahill has great dialogue, the characters all speak with a believable voice. But there were problems with the book that have me wondering if I'll get issue #2.
The art (always a subjective criticism) by Seth Damoose is very cartoony, which plays well with the lighter mood of the story, but at times seemed rougher than it needed to be. In comparison, the current Hellcat mini over at Marvel has a lot of the same challenges and demands for the artist, but I think does a better job.
The storytelling was frustrating at times. What is the significance of the wristwatch panel on page 3? It took me forever to figure out the robot hand panel on page 8 was dropping the jet, because they hadn't shown it being held recently. How does Renée survive the rockets a few pages later?
I was annoyed that they didn't give you the name of the second main character, Thunder or Something Thunder (you finish issue 1 unclear on this dude's name) till almost all the way through the book. Simon and Valentino should have caught this. And what is the deal with Clement Harbor as the home of the superteam!?! Huh??
More significantly, the central premise, Renée's looks, are not made clear by Damoose. She looks attractive and thin in most panels. What's the problem? And wasn't she pretty enough to be Miss Maine? And shouldn't the actual Gallant Girl be drawn in contrast as some kind of stunning bombshell knockout? Needed a LOT more contrast here.
Damoose also blows his last chance to hook the reader for issue #2, the final dramatic splash page of Renée in her first costume looks like a 10 minute sketch.
