Hellboy, BPRD, and its mini spin-offs are titles I usually trade wait.  Not because of the time between issues, but because when I read Hellboy, I want to get into that world.  Picking up an issue of an X book or Power Girl is like diving off the docks at the summer camp I used to work at.  It feels refreshing, even though it’s a bit murky, but I only had about fifteen minutes of swimming at a time before it was time to get out and go to the next activity.

Hellboy is the lagoon on Lost.  There’s waterfalls, and briefcases full of money.  And there’s this really weird noise that always seems to precede a giant pre-John Locke looking coil of smoke.  And everything’s so pretty.  I just want to float in there for a while.

But while I was putting up this week’s comics I saw the cover and thought…”Is that a…a luchador?”  It was.  So I picked up the book.

Having only a few minutes languishing in the near paradise lagoon should be torturous.  You’re in, and you’re immediately thinking “I’ve got to get out soon.  There’s an issue of Batman & Robin sitting right there, and I have to read it and write a revi…enjoy thisssssss, enjoy thisssssss.”  And then it’s over.

But I did enjoy it.  It was a nice refreshing dip between super hero comics.  Corben’s art is fantastic as always.  And Mignola rarely missteps.  And, ¿did I mention, LUCHADORES?  There were even some nifty Easter eggs, if you stop and look at the art, as opposed to just reading the text (which, really, you should never do when reading Hellboy, anyway).
