I thought this was an awesome ending for the first story in Hell. I've only read the first Witchfinder mini, but it was cool to hear Edward Grey's story of how how came to be in Hell. We got a nice glimpse into some more populated parts of hell, buildingwise at least, and it looked perfectly creepy. The last three page sequence through the towering seaside village was the perfect example of why Mignola is drawing this book himself; others have done well, but no one can give a setting that haunting--yet beautiful--mood quite like Mr. Mignola.
While the first three issues moved a bit slow, I think they worked really well to set up this last one. Hellboy's acceptance of his new found circumstance, wouldn't feel as eventful if he had just said, "Okay what's next?" in issue one. He was confused and uncertain of what he should do. A big part of who Hellboy is as a character, is his resistance to destiny. He doesn't want to be told what he has to do, by anyone or anything. His current predicament however is new, he still has a choice in what his actions will be, but he is in a world where he has to face his status as Anung un Rama head on. He can no longer hide from it by going on sojourns around the world.
The last few pages to me signified that Hellboy has fufilled the first stage of grief, acceptance, and now he is on the road to recovery; free to continue his heroic adventures in a limitless and crazy realm. I think the fact that his red skin has returned is signifigant too, since the final pages of "The Fury" he has been a grey-green, and in a state of limbo, so the return of his color coinciding with the acceptance of his fate means we are back to the adventures of an ass-kicking paranormal investigator.
It will be interesting to see the role this warlock Angus Weir will play, it seems like he is setting up to be an antagonist of sorts. I also hope Edward Grey continues to hang around to guide Hellboy a bit. I'm incredibly excited to continue this journey through Hell with Red, and I hope it's not too long before we get another issue, but I'm pretty sure it'll be worth the wait regardless.
