BAD ASS SINESTRO! That’s why this book is worth your $2.99. But if you want to know a little more about the issue, it’s part four of the five part “The Weaponer” story arc, Tony Bedard’s follow-up to his lackluster first arc on this title involving Cyborg Superman. This arc features the titles namesake, the Weaponer, the forger of Sinestro’s ring. For a little background, in Brightest Day, Deadman, current bearer of the white ring, is transported by said ring to Qward in the antimatter universe where he fights the Anti-monitor, and in the midst of battle falls from the heavens, but is saved by a net construct created by the white ring. The construct is permanent and eventually found by the Weaponer, who utilizes it to engineer a new weapon. With weapon in hand, the Weaponer kidnaps Soranik Natu in order draw out Sinestro and take revenge upon him for oppressing the Qwardians. In this issue, the two finally meet and Sinestro’s arrival is nothing short of majestic, thanks in large part to Tyler Kirkham’s art. He’s of the Image school of art, but I think it’s effective here, particularly with the battles and his use of shading. I was going to drop this book after Bedard’s first arc, but when I heard that Kirkham was going to be on it, who penciled one of my favorite comics, The Gift written by Raven Gregory of Zenescope fame, I decided to stay to see how he improved and how his work translated in the DCU and I’m glad I did. His rendition of Sinestro is easily one of my favorites. But I wouldn’t stay just for the art and thankfully Bedard has made me excited about this book again. The first arc was terribly mediocre, but this tale’s great, with a classic revenge plot, a cool new villain, and a telling exploration of the complicated relationship between Sinestro, his daughter, and her lover, Kyle Rayner. If you haven’t read the arc so far, I think you can pick up this issue and enjoy it, but I recommend picking up issues #53-55 to fully appreciate Bedard’s story and check out some more awesome art by Kirkham.
