The Green Lantern Corps is something that I started to pick up when I started to pick up the regular Green Lantern series.  The concept has always been interesting to me, and I enjoy this look at the other members of the Green Lantern Corps.  But lately, I’ve felt the issues have been a little bit meandering.  I mean, everything that was going on with Mongul was cool, but the last issue or two that focused on Mother Mercy just didn’t engage me and I felt that the art was a little bit off as I had a difficult time following just what was going on.  Surprisingly to me, this issue kicked a whole lot of ass.

This issue was an absolutely perfect finish to this storyline as it completley lived up to my expectations of a fight between the Corps and a yellow ringed Mongul.  I just had a ton of fun reading this issue and was on the edge of my seat with how the fight was going to play out.  With viewing all of the fears that the Corps members had to Bzzd’s surprising role in the fight to the final scene with Mother Mercy, this issue really encapsulated what I had hoped to see in this storyline:  Mongul getting his ass kicked by the Corps.  It was also surprising, too, to see the use of lethal force in this issue, and it will be interesting to see if it will come into play later on with the Alpha Lanterns.  Time will tell.

The art in this issue was better than it has been in previous issues, but I wouldn’t say that it was amazing.  I really liked the dynamic display of the hero’s fears as it condensed the fears to just two pages and didn’t bog the story down with those details.  The fight scenes, for the most part, were well paced and well drawn and there wasn’t a moment where I was confused in anyway.  The scene where Bzzd turns the tide of the fight was amazing, and it probably one of the single favorite panels in a long time.

This issue was a lot of fun, and I’m curious to see what role this series will play in the upcoming “Blackest Night” saga.  Hopefully, with these next few issues, we might be able to spend more time with Guy and Kyle as those buddy issues were a lot of fun.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Nice review! Tomasi did a great job in this issue of adding depth to the Corps. and making the reader believe that the Corps. and being in it means something. Best comic I’ve read so far in my 3 months of regular comic reading!

  2. If you’re digging Tomasi on this one, you should read the GL title proper.  Johns is really good on that book, and this latest storyline has kind of been exploring the importance of being a GL.

  3. I have been reading GL. Johns is a fantastic writer and he’s done a great job bringing back the Green Lantern. It’s nice to see Hal Jordan back in the fold and important again!
