To say “the Good goes to a freakshow” is an odd statement indeed, The Goon hangs out with weirdies, swamp folk & spider people on a regular basis, so naturally this particular fest of oddities is not quite what it appears. writing duties for this particular “one & done” issue fall to Evan Dorkin (Milk & Cheese, Beasts of Burden), and if you didn’t know, you’d never guess that it was anyone but series creator Eric Powell, the trademark Goon gallows humour runs as thick and fast as ever. giving up the scripting for the month has clearly allowed Powell’s visual side to run wild, the carnival scene evoking classic Wrightson era ‘Creepy’, each panel is tightly packed with grungy asymmetrical detail, Dave Stewart on colours nicely mixing sickly brown-greens for the sideshow with action accentuating rust reds.

The Goon as always is a solid read, and this one shot is as good a jumping one point as anyone could ask for.
