Just wanted to pop in and say that you should ALL check it out. I've enjoyed Lemire's Frankenstein variably throughout its run thus far, but always for its interesting character stuff. Part of what made Morrison's original book so great was the high concept sci fi whackiness of the whole thing, and Kindt is bringing much more of that to the book.
Starting with the Scare-ebs, I was a little disappointed. Nothing more outplayed then killer bugs, no? But no, they're far more interesting! Trained in the dark arts of assassination, they use microscopic dark matter parasite weapons to destroy flesh!
Concepts like Untropolis (an upside down city in a fourth dimensional cloud, complete with an inverted socio-physical stratification), Cloud packs (jet packs that channel the power of white holes to enter and exit dimensional branes), Time-Snipers (classified), Sci-bugs, poet spys named Crowly (god I love that visual), and much more. All in one issue.
From the first page, with a librarian caressing and disrobing around Frankenstein's hyper-pure manliness, you know the series is taking a surreal turn.
The constant flashes of buried memory are a great layer over the whole book, a wonderful subplot that only adds to the ongoing drama. The quotations from Byron are a welcome bit of in character parallel and commentary on the events, and add an erudite punctuation to a number of situations.
The art is enjoyable, but takes a level up here insofar as I love what they are doing to represent Frank's makeup, especially on that last page. It's far more creative, no doubt largely driven by Kindt, and I think it's brilliant.
Give this series a check out.
