Confession time: Mike Hodges’ FLASH GORDON is my favorite film of all time. I saw it 18 (yes, 18) times during its theatrical release. I’ve never had a better time at the movies. It was my STAR WARS (which I saw back in 1977, but didn’t make much of an impression). Over the years, I’ve met a few fans who have the same mad obsession with this film. Fortunately, for me, Alex Ross is one of those fans. Dynamite’s FLASH GORDON ZEITGEIST uses the film as its springboard; some scenes are lifted directly from the film, but setting the story in WWII is simply delicious. It appears the story will be splitting plots between Mongo and Earth. The art is the usual Dynamite house-style–lots of reds and oranges–and the storytelling was perhaps a little clunky in a place or two. To be honest, its hard for to be objective about this book. It feels like it was written just for me. As this is a skip week for the DC 52, and no Mignola-verse books either, this is an easy POW for me. Highly recommended.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
