Every time I finish a comic like Rocketeer, Black Beetle, or pretty much anything by Darwyn Cooke, I just want more and more and more. Five Ghosts by Barbiere and Mooneyham is exactly the more I’ve been wanting! Imagine an Indiana Jones type character, except he has the ability to call upon the powers of Robin Hood, Merlin, Sherlock Holmes,Miyamoto Musashi (I confess I had to look that one up), and Dracula. Mix in great pulpy adventure, with a wonderful cliff-hanger ending (and a teaser reminiscent of Morrison’s early issues of Batman and Robin), and a dash of noir…holy smokes, this baby is a trifecta!

The art is equally beautiful (frankly – I’d come for the art and stay for the story). It reminds me of stuff by Aja and Francavilla – and like Aja, Mooneyham is able to create a page with 10 or more panels that doesn’t feel as cluttered as it might be.

If you enjoy pulp (and I know many of you do) – this is the book for you!

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
