Some of the tie-ins were diverting, but the main series of “Fear Itself” has turned out to be a sorry excuse for comic book entertainment. Two popular characters have bitten the dust, but we can rest assured that in short order, they will both be revived in the most contrived manner imaginable. In the end, for a seven part series, the story felt remarkably rushed. The fight is over before Odin’s forces even join the fray, and we never find out exactly what the capabilities of the new uru weapons are. This comic even feels very un-Matt Fraction-like. Fraction is known for his long, drawn-out story arcs, and lots of characterization. There is very little psychological insight in this comic. I, for one, would have liked to have learned how Spiderman and/or Black Widow felt about being turned into Norse gods. Do I detect the overly meddlesome hand of editorial in this failed crossover? By the way, I do find the idea that Captain America will now be carrying around a cracked symbol of America to be somewhat irritating. Stuart Immonen is much admired by comic fans, but I found the art for this comic to be just a little better than average. There are lots of wavy colored lines that connote power, but it’s not always clear what’s happening in that mess of color. Maybe Immonen was just following vague directions in Fraction’s script. Immonen draws Captain America very thick around the middle, as though Cap’s waist were almost as wide as his shoulders. Anyone who has ever bought a man’s business suit knows that there is typically a six inch “drop” or difference between the chest and the waist. Very athletic men may have a twelve or even fourteen inch difference. I am not seeing those kinds of athletic proportions in Immonen’s drawing.
