I fell off of the last storyline, not because I disliked it, but because I lost track of it.  So I was overjoyed that this issue was one of those oh so popular “Jumping On Points” that I’ve heard so much about.  If you’re one of those people who hasn’t picked up this series for whatever reason, you should really pick up this issue and the next one.  It’s just a two-issue story arc, and it requires absolutely no knowledge of the series.  Not even periphery knowledge.  It follows the story of a goblin baseball hero (which begins as a Casey At The Bat parody), and a possible romance between The Frog Prince and Little Red Riding Hood.

Lapham’s artwork is very very green.  Not in an inexperienced or environmentally friendly way, but the color way.  You know, the color it’s not easy being.  The characters look lovely and classically Vertigo (in a good way).

This is just an all around fun story.  Not only is it a good place for new readers, but it’s also a good point for people who became disenchanted with the thick continuity to come back and enjoy at least a couple of issues.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Good review. Totally agree with what you are saying. I would caution new readers that after this two issue arc it will be right back into that ‘thick continuity.’ Personally I love the depth of this series and though it may be daunting I encourage anyone that likes this two issue arc to pick up all the trades and get into this book.

  2. @USPUNX: I agree on encouraging people to pick up the trades.  For the most part, I;v loved the thick continuity as well, but I’m glad they took a break from it.

  3. It is nice to be able to sit back and just enjoy a fun, unrelated story with these characters. It reminds you that while all the ‘big events’ in the Fables world are happening these characters still have their lives to live.

Also I find Fables strikes a nice balance between the continuity story and little breaks like this. Some books, DMZ in particular, take WAY to many of these little side story detours for me. Fables has found the perfect balance.

  4. I concur wholeheartedly.  DMZ’s fifth trade bothered me so much that I haven’t been able to read through the sxth oneyes, even though I’m pretty sure they resume the main story in it.
