I know this is a trite statement around here, but this is the best book you're not reading. First off, I would like to say that I might be a bit biased because I am an unabashed Brian Wood fan. I think he is able to capture the ambiguity of life and replicate it in his stories. This ability is what makes him one of my favorite writers. Okay onto the book. The past three issues have been about one team member and how they interact with different tribes in this new world that they have been dropped on to. Let me not forget that this is the stone age they have been dropped into and these kids with powers have just fallen from the sky. As a result they are each being individually worshiped by different tribes.
The first issue is an introduction that introduces the reader to the team. The entire narrative is told from Gem's perspective while she is being debriefed by the powers that be. This particular issue focuses on Matthew Callahan aka "threshold". He has been taken in by tribe of devout and loyal warriors. The main focus of this issue is on, how does someone who rules by fear and terror earn acceptance in a tribe where that matters naught.
This issue was the best so far because it truly embodies the subtitle "gods and monsters". In all respect Mr. Callahan is a god to this neolithic tribe. He even goes so far as to kill one of them for whacking him over the head with a stick too hard. To this tribe however death appears to be just part of the circle of life and gives him no mastery over them. It is not until he bests several of them in combat that he earns the respect he so desperately wants. Then he becomes the monster that fulfills the second half of the title. He goes on a rampage and destroys the plumbing system one of his fellow DV8 team members is trying to build with his tribe in tote.
The art by Rebekah Isaacs is great and only helps in the narrative flow of this book because there are so few words.
