This collection of 4 issues of The Defenders from 1978 (issues 62 to 65) gives you a lot of bang for your buck - 4 issues worth of comics for $6. But the comics themselves are just not all that great, even from a nostalgic aspect. A pretty random assortment of characters and villains pop up and declare themselves Defenders and all manner of chaos ensues. Nighthawk comes off as being mentally unbalanced, the Hulk goes missing for most of the story, and the rest is pretty my random battles in various locales around New York. To me, the more compelling material was contained in issue 65, and that had only tangential connections to the "Tournament" parts of this arc. --------------------------- The writing was pretty standard with what I felt were forced attempts at humor. Sal Buscema's art is always solid in my book, but I am not sure Jim Mooney is the best inker for him. The pages that Don Perlin inks are more to my liking. However, Don Perlin's pencil art for issue 65 is very stiff and cartoony. The slick paper and so-so garish coloring don't help the art shine. Bottom line: if you are dying for a slice of late '70's Marvel and have a spare $6 and can not find better back issues to buy at a LCS, this book isn't a terrible buy. But there are probably lots of better things in your LCS to spend that $6 on.
