Classic Dini Batman.  A new villain, the return of a forgettable villain who Dini makes itnteresting.  A cheap gimmick with a twist.  Crocodiles.  Possibility of redemption.  Plus a little epilogue to the previous Damian/Zsas/Abuse arc.  I go back and forth on whether or not I like Nguyen’s art, but it’s solid here and speaks well to the story.  It is, however, completely outclassed by Kudranski’s art on the Manhunter backup, which has been consistently the strongest of all of DC’s backup features.  (The 5 on art is mostly for Kudranski)

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Agreed. Excellent review! I was blown away by Kudranski’s art. I also think this should be in covers of the week.

  2. I loved the little Easter egg with the Monarch Theatre.  Every Bat-fan worth his stones knows that’s where Bruce’s parents were murdered in the first Burton movie.  This isn’t the only comic reference to the film that I’ve seen lately; a few issues back in Sirens, Gaggy destroyed his TV set with the same gadget that Nicholson’s Joker did in Batman ’89.  Fun stuff.

And yeah, Kudranski’s art is just awesome in the back-up.

  3. @JesTr: Agreed.  The cover is fantastic.

@Aphidboy: I’ve been noticing the movie references as well, though I didn’t catch The Jack Nicholson Joker reference in Sirens.  I’ll have to go back and check that out.
