I have loved almost every issue of “Avengers Academy” so far, but I didn’t love this one. I still liked it, though. As a comic book writer, Christos Gage’s great strength is his ability to delineate character. What sets Gage’s approach to characterization apart is his tendency to highlight the flaws that all human beings have, but are not often emphasized in comic book “heroes.” Tigra is impulsive and hypocritical. Quicksilver is petty. Stryker is possessed of an overweening ambition. Hazmat has not learned to censor herself, and tends to blurt out whatever she is thinking. Plot rather than character is in the foreground of this issue, however. There are still a couple of excellent character moments such as when Hazmat is panicking over the attack from Korvac, the godlike villain. She says, “I knew this would happen. You hang out with the Avengers, sooner or later some cosmic wack job shows up wanting to kill everybody. And who ends up dying? Thor? Iron Man? Nope. It’s people like us who get the dirt nap. I feel like the black guy in a disaster movie.”
What I didn’t love about this issue is that Korvac is the villain, and I find him to be ho hum. Korvac is so powerful that he can pretty much mop the floor with the Avengers until one of the heroes figures out some way to trick him into defeat. Korvac is also one of those characters whose power set is rather poorly defined. He just makes things happen in an arbitrary, godlike way. The classic Avengers villains that I would like to see, not only in “Academy,” but in the other Avengers books are characters like Graviton and Count Nefaria. The Avengers writers could also borrow villains from other characters. I think the Hulk’s arch nemesis, the Leader, would be a good Avengers villain. The X-Men villains Proteus, the Shadow King and Cassandra Nova would also be worthy adversaries for the Avengers. I am interested in how the older versions of the Academy students are going to defeat Korvac. The students must have made some huge leaps in terms of power as they aged.
Tom Raney’s art in this comic is serviceable. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Raney has a style that is essentially realistic, but it’s not especially pretty. I liked the work of Mike McKone and Sean Chen on this title more, but Raney may grow on me.
