So here’s why I liked this comic: it’s not an argument that this is a “five star book” or that it merits a POW, rather, I was in the mood for a good comic superhero story and I liked this one, today, because I was in the right mood for this book. Nothing more than luck. Yesterday I might have hated it.

See, I’m a social worker in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Washington, DC. Maybe daily I look around at the community I work in and think about how everything would be simpler if people weren’t so… human. I get mad at the poverty, the selfeshness, the murders, the strong people picking on the weak. This comic spoke to me because I sometimes feel like Mera; walking amongst the people and reacting to their foolish ways, being affected their human needs. “Why are they so evil to one another!?” Just like her, I too sometimes feel like giving up on people, and just when I’m at the end of my rope, I see some sliver of kindness, some promise for human kind, and I realize that people aren’t so bad after all.

It was a simple story, character driven, and not about Aquaman or the destruction of the universe. It’s not for everyone, I can understand if you don’t like the book, but for me, it made my stack.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
