Geoff Johns continues to show people that Aquaman is anything but a joke.

This is issue picks up literally in mid action, with Aquaman and Mera on the run from Mera’s betrothed and to the aid of Atlantis, which is under seige from the Scavenger and his army.

The relationship between Mera and Aquaman has always been a big part of the draw for me. Their dialogue as they flee once again shows why they are one of the greatest romantic couple in comics.

In the meantime, Murk, Swatt and Tula continue their quest to free Orm from his surface prision… but they find themselves torn when they hear the news that Atlantis is being attacked. Stay or go?

My favourite part of this book (in addition to the Mera/Arthur dialogue) is when Aurthur steps up and shows he is indeed a warrior king… and we get to see him use his powers to a new degree… one which provides an amazing two page spread that wouldn’t look out of place in a Hollywood blockbuster… and that leads to what actually IS a shocking ending.

As good as Johns is, huge credit for this book being so good belongs to the art team of Pelletier, Parsons and Reis. The art is dynamic and (pardon the pun) fluid. Arthur looks powerful and noble. The battles are full of energy. You FEEL like you’re under the surface with these characters watching everything unfold. And it’s beautiful. Wait ’til you get to that aforementioned two page spread; wow!

I’ve been an Aquaman fan for a long time, and I can honestly say this may well be the best Aquaman series ever. A bold statement, perhaps. But it really is that good.
